Kaali Khuhi Review –Predictable story, lack of suspense and dragging kill an important social subject somewhere in the middle.
Kaali Khuhi Netflix is a story told from the point of view of the dead, the treatment is rather spooky. This holds true for Kaali Khuhi as well. More importantly, the social prejudice against girl child is referenced to, in a non-pedantic way.
Shivangi is the only child of a city based couple , who visit an ailing grand mother in a remote village in Punjab. The girl starts to see a young girl who seems to be distressed. It is later revealed that the girl is infact the spirit of her father’s younger sister who was killed by the village elderlies as she was a female child. Her body was disposed off mercilessly in the village well (Kalli Khuhi). In those days, the birth of a female child was considered a liability for the parents. Many an infant females were sacrificed in the same well and in the same manner.
The family aunt (Shabana Azmi) is aware of the village secret and relives her horrible past, while trying her level best not to evoke the spirits and the curse associated with them.

Cinematography
The best credit goes to the location choice and the true to reality depiction of an old Punjab village life. Old well, dilapidated but clean houses, door latches, 2 storey houses in a farm in middle of nowhere. This is so typically rural punjab, much of it even today.
Story
Wronged spirits seeking revenge through a curse, is a common story line. So, no kudos for the rather oft repeated storyline. The treatment of the story is also quite predictable so if a viewer is viewing this content for some novelty, they are in for disappointment.
Performances
While Shivangi , enacted by Riva Arora is a happy young girl, the dilemma of seeing spirits and dealing with them is brought out convincingly. Shabana Azmi as the old village aunt close to the bereaved family is also very watchable in this genre she has hardly been seen in, especially lately.
Sanjeeda Sheikh, tries hard to fit in as a middle class mother who does not get along with the matriarch of the family ( Her husband’s mother). Satyadeep Mishra is convincing as the father, a husband, a son and a brother of a girl child, now a spirit seeking revenge for the wrong sone to her. While the performances and the actors are chosen just fine, it is the predicatability of the story that fails to draw much viewability from a decent cast ensemble.
Screenplay and After Effects
The spooky visuals are there, but not really scary. One may argue that when you know that horror is predictable it fails to evoe that adrenaline rush that comes from a suspense associated with it. Rvenge for a social injustice as horror is a dead genre by all accounts, and this is again proven in Kaali Khuhi.
The sad part is that even the after effects like black vomit, spooky eyes of village woman, white faced spirit of the girl child who was killed all fail to evoke the scary feeling that was expected out of a horror/supernatural content.
Background Music
Background Music of a Horror Music is the backbone, esp of the scary scenes. However, Kaali Khuhi’s music is a very passable affair.
Thus, on various accounts, Kaali Khuhi fails to gather the viewer approval that it may have.
