Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s Film Ghoomketu is a story of scattered upbringing, the tenacity of dreams, and a reality check, done right. The story of Zee5 originals production Ghoomketu talks about the dreams of middle-class youth, Ghoomketu, from the interiors of the village of Mohana in Uttar Pradesh. He aspires to become a scriptwriter in Bollywood. Initially, he walks up to a popular magazine Gudgudee’s office in his village, and there, the chief editor Joshi gifts him his self-written guidebook of successful scriptwriting in Bollywood.
Ghoomketu’s father is a well-known grocery shop owner in the village, addressed as Dadda by everyone. He is always irritated with Ghoomketu, slaps his left and right whenever he makes any mistake and remarries after the demise of Ghoomketu’s mother when he is just a child. But at heart, he loves Ghoomketu a lot and cannot withstand anyone else talking ill about his son.
For Ghoomketu, Santo Bua, the sister of Dadda, was his real mother, who helps him with money, the family album, and encouragement to flee from Mohana and go to Mumbai, to live his dreams. Within ten days of his not-so-happy marriage, Ghoomketu leaves for Mumbai, without even taking a look at her wife’s face once, Janki Devi (Ragini Khanna).
The Story takes a new turn when Guddan, a somewhat aged youth political leader, pressurizes the police department of Maharashtra and a corrupt good-for-nothing Inspector Badlani (Anurag Kashyap) gets a deadline of 30 days to either catch Ghoomketu or get transferred to some rural corner of the country. Little does he know that Ghoomketu is living on rent on his own property and ultimately returns back to Mohana after meeting him once.
Ghoomketu also has guest appearances by none other than Amitabh Bachchan, Ranveer Singh, and Sonakshi Sinha.

Beyond doubt Ghoomketu Zee5 Web Film is a script written for the versatile Actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui. A Scriptwriter aspiring to write scripts for Bollywood, his life, his struggles, his family and marriage. Nawazuddin nails his character with supreme panache and glue his fans to the OTT screens. Viewer be warned that Ghoomketu is not Ganesh Gaitonde (Sacred Games). He’s just Ghoomketu, and that’s all right!
Ragini’s short screen presence provided little scope to showcase her skills as an actress, but she did quite well too in an understated dutiful wife, longing for her husband’s attention. Ila Arun’s portrayal of a benevolent mother figure towards a child who lost his mother in the early years of life, is way beyond just very good! Anurag Kashyap also gives a lot to the character of Inspector Badlani. But the one who still stole the crown of the best performer keeping in mind the brevity of role and lack of solitary presence on screen is Raghuvir Yadav. His appearance, dialogue throw and acting through his expressions sum up the life in a village and his quiet, yet deep love for his son.
The characterization was strongly built throughout the script. The dialect and diction of the script of Zee5 Ghoomketu remains rooted to the plot. In a few instances, the substance of the script tends to deviate from the main idea of the film, however, the performances of the lead and the character actors more than makes up for that.
Sneha Khanwalkar and Jasleen Royal made a good team as far as music is concerned in Ghoomketu. Background scores also matched well with the situations of the film.
In a film like Ghoomketu, cinematography could have been given a little more important than it actually got. With Satya Raj Nagpaul as the DOP, there was a good implementation of special effects but that could not break the monotony of the script as well as the screenplay. Editing by Kratika Adhikari and Pushpendra Nath Misra is passable.
Pushpendra Nath Misra has written as well as executed the narrative of the movie very well. It stands out given that the Voice over also is from Nawazuddin Siddiqui. It is the climax of the movie which may have been justified better onscreen. Ghoomketu’s character also required a lot of proper structural detailing. While he himself does not want to publicize item numbers and predictable impractical stories in his film, he resorts to body shaming his wife, whose face he sees for the first time after 40 days of their marriage. Ghoomketu is a good film, only that, with the casting and resources that it put together, the viewer expectation went way beyond the resultant output.
Overall, Ghoomketu is a film with a great concept and decent execution. It should be watched esp. for the affable character of Ila Arun and the quiet but loving father that Raghuvir Yadav portrays. It also brings out the dialect of the region very well and entertains the viewer through its screenplay and dialogues.
