Paava Kathaigal Netflix Review –  Societal pressure on Women

Paava kathaigal is a set of four painful stories, on offering. How a woman is treated by society is the key subject under discussion.

A woman faces the burn on several issues be it cast violence, sexuality, and in general acceptance by society under any natural circumstance. The red colour in animation title is symbolic of intense life of women, violence and some bloodshed.

Paava Kathaigal’s first story is ‘Thangam’, it’s about male friendship and sexual orientation as the main theme and other minor theme’s. It is a interesting watch.

It’s a story of two childhood friends. One of the child is transgender person, child is Kalidas Jayaram aka Sathaar, and is attracted to Sarvanan aka Shantanu Bhagyaraj , who in turn is attracted to Sathaar’s sister Sahira. The way these characters feel, how the society perceives them forms the story of the movie.

The movie deals with the natural physical and sexual feelings of transgender person. This movie is reminiscent of “oru thalai ragam” .

Thangam has glimpses of this movie in certain parts, sathaar is subjected to homophobic jokes and is called as “sarvanan purushan” as the story passes the role of who thangam is slowly revealed. It’s a one sided love angle which is the best part to be revealed in this short story. It depicts the honour of family in these situations how the transgender is treated and interfaith marriage.

 

The second Story “panna uttranum” has few swear words. It’s a story about two sisters jyothilakshmi and aadilakshmi and their father padam kumar.

The story is, one of the sisters is gay and the other sister wants to marry outside their cast. Aadilakshmi aka Kalki koechilin is in love with Penelope, the story revolves around her majorly explaining her life.

The story of love panna uttaranum greatly affects the story in thangam while we do an immediate comparison as it brings down the intensity of the series as whole. Love panna uttaranum looses the seriousness while narration.

Vignesh shivan the director of the film, is intense in terms of using swear words, but he fails to understand that it does not translate to conveying the delicate message to society.

The episode is interesting because it’s about the caste based killings and a secret society for same, a very interesting character has been used by director to play the head of the secret society.

Padam kumar who is father of two main characters is a casteist, he has done an excellent job for this role. He is a fake and hollow person who pretends to be an anti-caste.(for every inter caste marriage he has a way to even out the effects of it in the secret society which is underground)

The way aadilakshmi gives explanation why she has female friends is good and tells how scared she is about the society; her character also tells silently how she dislikes men for violence she has seen in her life etc.

The transgender LGQBTI+ component is very short in the movie, if more explored it would have been great for the impact it intended to make.

 

The third story

A small little girl ponnuthayi is a part of the family of four, an elder sister, mother and father. Father Gotham menon teaches the small girl she has her wings of own to fly, while mother simran always warns her to be vigilant, as there is a lurking danger around.

The elder sister attains puberty and is taught to be a good woman, looking at her elder sister growing in a womanly way the younger one likes it and idolises her, aspires to grow up like her, little does she know the severe strict life she is living like a pure, pious woman in her growing years, i.e. the perfect life she is balancing to live.

Gowtham acts well, especially to good to see him, when he learns about ponnuthayi’s secret.

The parts where simran knows what happens to ponnuthayi, simran’s reaction are superb.

Gowtham is good s a father, but a veteran like parkash raj or like him would also have got out the character well etched.

Ponnuthayi has done an exceptionally well job.

The theme about the honour of women has been brought out well by Menon.

 

Fourth Story ‘Ooru Iravu’ is a story of an intercaste marriage and consequences of it in the form of how it impacts the immediate family members and society in large.

Sai pallavi aka sumathi has come to her home for a baby shower ceremony, all in the family, mother, brother sree are cold in behaviour towards her except, sree in particular has faced lot in college when people learnt that her sister eloped, father prakash raj, is seen as an warm, understanding father.

The father has a little change of heart when he knows that living in big city like Chennai, are broader minded and intercaste marriage is not a big deal.

Lot of emotions in movie could not be brought up as it’s a short story, but we may visualise them to understand the story better.

Prakash raj is seen in two characters in the same movie, as a caring father in the start and a brutal one in the end, it was truly a heart aching experience to watch something like this.

It’s a mirror for some reality in actual lives, but showing something like this in a movie does not really serve the purpose.

Prakash raj and sai pallavi have emoted very well throughout.

vetri as director has given his best shot, he maintained his style like connecting past to present.

Ameer filmmaker, has done a good job , especially in the end.
