Pariwar Web Series Review: A series surviving on humour, based on a common plot
The story of Disney+ Hotstar web series Pariwar is a series of deftly woven comical sketches. It is important to note that although characterisation is a very important part of any film or web series, sometimes it is acceptable to have more emphasis on the storyline than the definition of the characters individually. But sadly, Pariwar fails to uphold that glory.
Pariwar Hotstar meaning family, is actually the story of uniting a family. A wealthy father is disgraced to see two of his sons fighting with each other for money and rights over his properties. So, he decides to give away a lucrative piece of land that was under his ownership to Gangaram, a theatre actor. This was done to get a home built for the widows and widowers to come and live. Now let’s take a dig at the structure of the family. Kashiram himself, is a widower. He has two sons—Mahipal and Shishupal. Both of them are married. And guess what, their wives share the same bond as they do—siblings. Two sisters married to two brothers—already a far-fetched structure of the family. However, there is huge wall of bitterness that separates these two brothers and the two sisters—the name of which is money.
Mahipal and Shishupal have a sister, Mandakini—who is a recent return from America to India. While Mahipal and Shishupal keep squabbling over the piece of land, Mandakini seems to be nonchalant. This is not just because she is a foreign-return and doesn’t care much about her father’s land. This is also because she falls in love with Munna, Gangaram’s son. The story takes its own pace, with comical moments dominating the execution.

Pariwar Trailer
Pariwar as a project had ample opportunities for improvisation. Attention to details could have saved the series from monotony at places.
Script
The script of Pariwar contains the flavour of humour. This makes the story seemingly eventful and lengthens the threshold of monotony to a huge extent. Comedy is tough to enact. But it is even tougher to write comedy and frame dialogues. Dialogues and diction have been developed very well, making the script of Pariwar one of the most remarkable ones.
Acting
Although Kashiram stands to be the main patriarchal culprit for the feuds between the two brothers, Gajraj Rao has very little role to play both in terms of his screen time as well as in terms of the performance factor. Yashpal Sharma and Ranvir Shorey keep the heart of the film beating at its best with their unbelievable energy sparking through their performances. And one man who never fails to amaze, is none but Abhishek Banerjee. From the cold-blooded violent murder in Paatal lok, to the prolific gangster in Kaali, Abhishek Banerjee skips into the skin of any character and brings that character out from the screen to the ground of reality. Pariwar is also not an exception.
Music
Background scores have been really engaging and appropriate as far as the plot and moments were concerned. The sound designers did quite a good job in blending melodies in the optimum proportion.
Cinematography, Special Effects & Editing
Given a series like Pariwar, it is not expected to have a lot of focus on cinematography. And there is no exception to this pre-conceived notion in this case. However, Parixit Warrier did quite a good job, keeping in mind the context of the series. The editing of the series goes quite well as Suresh Pai did a great work in deciding the best way of preserving the binding of the series.
Direction
Sagar Ballary—a name that instantly reminds of the box office blaster Bheja Fry. Retracing the memory lane to this movie, a lot of the Sagar Ballary touch is missing in Pariwar. With a good range of actors, the series fails to utilise them well enough. From the direction point of view, the attention to minute details is one of the most important aspects that is missing. However, Pariwar is a good series to watch if you are really bored and want a comic break from this pandemic.
