Durgamati The Myth Movie Review –Durgamati is not a horror film, it’s a story of intellect

Durga mati the Myth Story reveals the dirty secrets of a politician, under the garb of a horror story. The film stands partly unpredictable in its delivery, while the characters take their own shape in course of time.

Ishwar Prasad is a politician with a spotless political career for the past 35 years. He is the minister of water resources in the state of Goa and does a lot for people. He hates corruption and even disowned his own younger brother on hearing his corruptive activities of taking commission from the tenders.

Cut to present, in the last 6 months, priceless antique idols had been stolen from 12 temples. On investigating, it has been found that all the locations of larceny are a few kilometres away from any public meeting or inauguration that had been attended by Ishwar Prasad. The CM then assigns the Joint Commissioner of CBI, Satakshi Ganguly, the duty to investigate the case, who decides to interrogate Chanchal Chauhan, a lady serving Ishwar Prasad as the secretary for 10 years, but now in prison.

ACP Abhay Singh’s younger brother Shakti Singh, was an MBA graduate from Stanford university. But he decided to leave his comfortable life in the States and returned home in his village to stand by public. He wants to make the lives of public somewhat better, and lead organised non-violent protests so that the villagers get their due. Shakti and Chanchal eventually fall in love and get engaged. But on account of the Prandhara project of the Government, Shakti found that the villagers were cheated. The Government had promised to vacate only 129 villages. But it was found that under Chanchal’s signature, 137 villages were under the vacating operation. On confrontation a feud took place between Shakti and Chanchal and it was shown apparently that Chanchal shot Shakti in self-defence.

Under the supervision of ACP Abhay Singh, Chanchal is secretly brought to Durgamati Palace, a haunted palace no people come even during the day, so that Satakshi Ganguly can interrogate her. And then begins a heart-rending interplay of all that is natural and supernatural. The soul of Chanchal is shown to be possessed by Durgamati, a queen who fought her heart out to protect her people, but never tolerated injustice and treachery in her kingdom.

Durgamati— The Myth is a complete package of entertainment with all other ingredients that a good web movie should contain. Let’s take a tour at the different aspects of this web-movie.

Script

The script of Durgamati—The Myth is extremely eventful. It has all essential elements befitting the situations that are encountered in the film. Even in the predominant garb of a horror atmosphere, Durgamati—The Myth also contained a comic punch at places. The script was detailed and the dialogues were written with extra care suiting the characters of the movie.

Acting

Bhumi Pednekar was just beyond marvellous. The character of Chanchal was actually more mysterious than the character of Durgamati. Durgamati was mighty, royal, brave and courageous. Chanchal on the other hand, is calm and quiet with her secrets locked up straight inside her heart. The demarcation is steep—and Bhumi Pednekar did her best to befit both the characters. Arshad Warsi was excellent in his screen presences of bits and pieces. He too had a multi-layered character, and that’s what added a new spice to Durgamati—The Myth. Mahie Gill played the character of Satakshi with ease and confidence. However, a little more of attention should have been given to her Bengali accent that was not very essential for her character. Last but not the least, Jisshu Sengupta was absolutely amazing in his brief role of ACP Abhay Singh. He reflected a lot of toughness and hatred in his eyes for Chanchal, the alleged killer of his brother, Shakti.

Music

Background scores have played a very important role in Durgamati— The Myth. Music actually helped a lot in holding the gravity and taking people back to the period of Queen Durgamati. Jakes Bejoy and Abhinav Sharma undoubtedly did a very good job in leading the music team of Durgamati— The Myth.

Cinematography, Special Effects & Editing

Cinematography of Durgamati— The Myth particularly deserves 100% appreciation keeping in mind the angle of every shot, its beginning, ending and its merging with the next one. Kuldeep Mamania showed great expertise in filming this movie with a lot of crystal-clear neatness and simplicity. Unnikrishnan Payoor Parameswaran as the editor deserves a standing ovation for keeping the binding of each of the scenes so strong.

Direction

Coming to the most important aspect of this movie, the direction, Ashok G had put in his best into Durgamati—The Myth. His minute approach toward strong characterisation of the movie enhanced the overall executing in a very big way. However, a lady doing every paranormal activity with so much of ease all by herself appears to be a little far-fetched. Some more insight to the planning part of Chanchal could have taken the film to a different level. However, Durgamati—The Myth is an excellent movie to watch, irrespective of whether you believe in ghosts.
