Black Widows Web Series Review – The plan’s bland, the flow is spicy.
The baseline of the story of Zee5 web series Black Widows appears to be enticingly dark, but there’s hardly any secret or mystery hidden in the comparatively mysterious title of the web series. Lalit-Jaya, Jatin-Veera and Nilesh-Kavita are three married couples who arrive at the holiday home of Jatin to celebrate Lalit’s 50th birthday. And then when the three men go for boating in the lake adjacent to the resort, they are blown off by a blast. And thus, the three “happily married” ladies turn into widows—Black Widows.
Being a series reflecting thrill, this couldn’t have been an accident. The three wives planned this by planting explosives in the boat of the men. But the question is—why? Well, affluence doesn’t rinse off all grief, and poverty doesn’t always carry a tranquil blanket of joy. Lalit being a successful and powerful businessman, used to find his joy of victory while physically and emotionally tormenting his second wife Jaya. He had a son from his first wife, who became mentally ill after timeless exposure to the torture inflicted upon her by Lalit. Jatin and Veera had a love marriage. But due to the pressure of work and his immense madness towards money, Jatin started losing control over his anger and didn’t seem to value neither Veera nor their little daughter Sia. Jatin also threatened to kill Sia under the influence of pointless anger and frustration. Lastly, Nilesh and Kavita seemed to be a lovely couple where perhaps Nilesh loved Kavita. But due to his failure of achieving the lifestyle that he wanted to afford, Nilesh used Kavita in order to impress and fix deals with the big shots of business, and Lalit was definitely one of them.

Black Widows Zee5 Trailer
The plot of Black Widows is age-old. We have heard about it, read about it and also seen it in different shapes and sizes. There’s a sheer lack of realism as well. But performances shoot up the overall execution to a different level.
Script
The script of Black Widows is bland at places. But at some moment it lifts up the spirit of the series to a different level with punchlines of comedy as well as twisted answers to simple and direct questions. The script is extremely eventful and brings out the flavour of every character through perfect dialogues and diction.
Acting
Starting with the Black Widows—Mona Singh was her usual self. She didn’t seem to be any different from her performance in Kehne Ko Humsafar Hain web series on Zee5+ ALT Balaji. Her chemistry with Sharad Kelkar and her chemistry with Ronit Roy had no difference on her part. Her voice modulation was monotonous. Shamita Shetty went with the flow of her character. Her performance was so good that she almost made the viewers forget that this is the same powerful Ishika of Mohabbatein. Swastika Mukherjee ruled the widows with her clarity of diction, expressions and apt body language. Sharad Kelkar was amazing—his craft of acting is blooming day by day and he is undoubtedly going to make a more secured place in Bollywood given his pace of work. Saheb Bhattacharya was good in his brief screen presence. Coming to the other Bengali bigshots—Parambrata Chattopadhyay sculpted out the best of Pankaj Mishra with immense deftness. Raima Sen, not a regular villain, also manages to draw well as far as Innaya Thakur is concerned. Sabyasachi Chakraborty as Barry Singh Dhillon comes out of his usual shell of strong and protagonist-shaded characters and plays the traitor beautifully.
Music
Aditya Pushkarna’s fascinating background score adds spice and sets the perfect tone to this high-octane thriller, perfectly complementing the charged action sequences and the brilliant direction. It sets the mood for the gripping web series and keeps the curiosity of the audience high, till the last possible frame.
Cinematography, Special Effects & Editing
Subhankar Bhar showed an excellent approach to present the story and execute the plot with exquisite brilliance through his work of camera. Sumit Chowdhury could have been a little sharper in his editorial approach toward Black Widows.
Direction
Going by the other directorial works of Birsa Dasgupta, Black Widows is more on the shallower side. But the heavy casting and excellent performance fills in the gap in detailed direction and lack of a befitting script and Black Widows a good patchwork of entertainment.
