Breakup Story Web Series Review – A unique plot with a weak message
Breakup Story Web Series Story is a collective tale of 5 breakups, through the 5 episodes of the series. The name focuses on the central theme of the series—which focuses on how many types of breakup do we know about, or at times become ignorant of because they are not very “common”.
The episodes are connected to each other not by chains of events, but by one common character taken at a time. Priyanka breaks up with Sanjoy after confronting him that she knows about the latter’s encounter with a woman at the Esplanade crossing. Innocent at heart, Sanjoy admits his mistake, and they part. Shreya is a lonely lesbian who never knew the meaning of affection.
Her roommate Roshni showed her what true love, affection, and connection meant. But two years later, she had to move in with her fiancé. Just after leaving the apartment when Sanjoy, Roshni’s fiancé understood how much she loved Shreya, he decided to let her go back because his story with Priyanka was left incomplete. Little that Roshni knew, that in those few minutes of dilemma, Shreya would have given her life.
Joyeeta and Som shifted in an apartment 6 months ago. But distance increased in between them and she decided to leave, on knowing that Som is falling for Aparna, his college professor. In a few days, Joyeeta dies in an accident and Som gets disillusioned. The 4th episode marks an encounter between Aparna and Som, where Som confesses his love for Aparna, an almost divorcee, and tries to propose her with a ring. But Aparna hates to be committed to permanence and bonding.
She loves unpredictability and kills Som. She then calls her almost ex-husband to meet her up the next morning to check on each and every clause of the divorce agreement. Meanwhile, Dhruba gets in a huge fight with Amrita, the woman who was there with Sanjoy at the Esplanade crossing, for Amrita discovers that Dhruba is yet to complete his divorce formalities with Aparna. And of course, after they break up, Dhruba commits suicide.

Breakup Story Bengali Web Series is a good project in terms of its presentation. But the factor of monotony was not eradicated well enough.
Script
The script of Breakup Story is not quite eventful. Dialogue framing substantiates the characterization in a good way. But there’s a clear lack of punch and substance in the script. The way Som and Aparna’s characters got their dimensions through dark and pensive poetry—other characters could also have been sculpted out in a better way through the script.
Acting
Saurav Das is a constant face in most of the web series of Hoichoi productions. He does his job well and, in this case, Breakup Stories is not an exception. It was a treat to the eyes to see Chandreyee Ghosh on screen after such a long time. She truly slipped into the skin of the mysterious yet mesmerizing Aparna. Anindita Bose is somewhat under-utilized with her short monopoly in the first episode. Yet, she manages to deliver in a fantastic way. Ranojay’s work is also quite well as Dhruba. Aryan Bhowmick is also delectable in portraying the confused, creative, and of course the emotionally driven character of Som. But what kept the heart of the series alive is the powerful performance of Sauraseni Maitra through her to-the-point narrative and the submissive yet caring character of Roshni played by Tuhina Das.
Music
Background scores worked out quite well with Amit-Ishan as the men behind the music. A little more emphasis could have worked wonders though.
Cinematography, Special Effects & Editing
Prosenjit Chowdhury as the DOP and Sanglap Bhowmik as the editor of Breakup Story did a splendid job in putting together the visuals of this series with beauty at its best. But the lighting setup for all the indoors seemed to carry a little monotony throughout the series.
Direction
Mainak Bhowmik as the director somewhat disappointed his fans and admirers. The man who created masterpieces like Maach, Mishti & More, Bibaho Diaries, Goyenda Junior, and Generation Ami—a lot more was expected from him as the director of Breakup Story. His way of story-telling is fine, but there is actually a sharp lack of reality that he demands to portray. Roommates meet to part—and in such a short time, a person committing suicide just because her partner left with her fiancé and that too when she herself was used to changing cities in every 2-3 years, is not only impractical but can also deliver a not so good message to the viewers.
Bhowmik targeted the idiosyncrasies of the human soul; but in the process, he forgot what he actually wanted to convey to the viewers. Most of the casting members were underutilized to an alarming degree. The way of speaking, the throw of dialogues, especially by Sohini Sarkar, didn’t really differ from most of the performances. There was a lack of minute direction. However, the concept chosen was quite good and the overall performance made Breakup Story Bengali Web Series a one-time watch on Hoichoi.
