Welcome Home Movie Review – Relentless brutality with a psychotic crime story, with references to patriarchy.

Welcome Home movie 2020 on Sony Liv is a content piece with disturbing crime visuals and violence. It is a psychotic triller from almost the word go. Anuja (Kashmira Irani) and Neha (Swarda Thigale), teachers in a Government school in Maharashtra are sent of a Census updation Duty to a remote district. In a secluded house, they come across 4 individuals , an old ailing mother, a son , son’s pregnant daughter and their domestic house help.

Finding the behavior of the family very weird they decide to go back to the house to help the bruised daughter. Forced to stay in the house as it gets very rainy, the girls are badly tortured and forced. The brother of one of the girls tries to help, but

References to acceptable patriarchy, to the extent of normalizing domestic abuse towards women are unmissable in this film. For instance, Anuja is coerced both by her fiancée and father to give up her job to make preparations for her impending marriage. Neha’s brother indulges in beating her. The daughter in the isolated is abused by her own father for many years with multiple pregnancies , with full consent and knowledge of the grand mother. It is sick to see the portrayal of something so unacceptable at a human level, as something which is so passable in our society. But the references are sad, but could be true to a large extent.

Welcome Home Sony Liv Trailer

While the visuals are distinctly disturbing, the story is predictable and dragged. So much gory content can hardly hold viewer interest, leave alone make them feel engaged. One feels the pain of the women, but the sheer lack of remorse or psychotic endless brutality just makes one cringe at the portrayal.

Story

To expect Welcome home movie Hindi out of Sony Liv after marvels like Scam 1992 is downright let down. They certainly can do much better. Per se , the story does not have anything new to offer and if you have watched a lot of Western content, chances are, you may not find this thriller up to the mark as a scary, hair raising content piece. It’s Indian contextuality makes it cringy, if not crappy.

Screenplay

There are a few unreasonable story sub plots like girls choosing to go to the isolated house second time over. Especially after not getting the right vibes the first time itself.

There are more times when story is not even the consideration in the film. There is a delayed approach in reaching to the real point and boring over-wait for reaching to the point in many a scenes.

Background Music

The background Music tries its level best to create a scary, menacing, anticipatory environment. However, the outcome is at best average. The ominous feeling is somewhat missing.

Direction

This is a story we hope was not said in the way it was said. The endless violence is cringy and the story was predictable and failed to evoke pity or empathy at any level. A serious social malaise which was “used” as a titillating entertainment plot in the name of web film. Sadly, it failed to deliver what it set out to do.
