Damayanti Web Series Review – History always keeps changing.

Damayanti Hoichoi 2020 web series is not a story of a simple and common woman. It is a tale of a woman who travels an extra mile, who thinks a step ahead. From the beginning of the series, Damayanti, a professor of History in a university, is shown to be a woman who is adept in multi-tasking. She is on her laptop, doing something on excel, and at the same time using her tablet for some other work.

Meanwhile, her husband Samaresh calls her and she grabs her cordless earphone without even looking at them. While she is on a call with her husband, Samaresh surrenders to Damayanti’s presumption that he is unable to pack his luggage for their short trip. Without having Samaresh explain the issues in particular, she smoothly directs him and on following her instructions meticulously, Samaresh succeeds in packing. By far, it is a more sophisticated portrayal of a wife who knows her husband well, so much so that she can even presume the mistakes that her husband would have made.

But then comes the twist. Damayanti gets up from her seat in the library and starts moving. While talking to Samaresh on her phone, she minutely observes a boy who is trying to hack the profile of a girl and uploading her images to the internet. She immediately instructs the librarian to disable the WiFi connection of the library. As soon as the WiFi connection gets disabled, the boy gets frustrated and comes up to the librarian complaining about the broken WiFi connection. But then Damayanti informs her that she already has good knowledge of what the boy was actually doing and then the boy is taken to the Principal’s office.

The story takes its own pace where we get to see that Damayanti is one her way to a short trip to Bolpur in Shantiniketan with her husband Samaresh. Right from the moment they check in to the hotel, Damayanti encounters a lot of thing suspicious about the hotel and its stuff. And slowly this mystery unravels like the layers of a shallot and then we get to see the detective in a professor whose connection is to the subject of History, and History keeps changing, as rightfully pointed out by Damayanti.

Script

The script of this series with quite a good concept doesn’t match up to the other elements of the production. Dialogues are not designed based on characterisation and only the central characters have been taken care of during dialogue delivery. Can an employee, or a professor of a university ever say to the Principal, the head of the institution: “The ball is now in your court, Ma’am?”. Damayanti presents many such instances as far as the script is concerned.

Acting

Tuhina Das has done an excellent job as Damayanti. Her dialogue delivery, expressions and strategic movements suite best to the character. With Tuhina in this incarnation, it is not very difficult to believe that the audience will for some time not believe that this is the same Brinda who won our hearts in Ghawre Baire Aaj. Indrashish Roy, Soumya Banerjee and Chandreyee Ghosh were equally good.

Music

Nabarun Bose’s work as the music composer could have been somewhat better. Thrillers demand good background scores that will enhance the atmosphere of thrill and suspense in the project. However, serenity was well established at places required through the music of Damayanti web series.

Cinematography, Special Effects & Editing

Cinematography in the Hoichoi original productions have given gifts like Tarader Shesh Tarpon and Tansener Tanpura. Damayanti has also given similar experience to the viewers with excellent work of camera by Tuban as the DOP of Damayanti. Sumit Chowdhury has also done a good work as the editor of Damayanti.

Direction

Rohan Ghose and Aritra Sen undoubtedly made a good pair as the directors of Damayanti Web Series Bengali. But what they lacked is a much more detailed vision. Tuhina was sufficiently utilised, but not aptly enough. In fact, there are aspects which violate the expected realism of the audience of 2020. A professor receiving calls, in fact going from her seat to a bookshelf while on call inside a library of a university—too farfetched. And even if not so, this sequence doesn’t convey a very good message. Moreover, it would have been better if Damayanti explained how she found out what the boy was actually doing on his laptop. Nonetheless, Damayanti is a web series worth watching keeping in mind its theme, storyline and performances.
