A Suitable Boy Netflix  Review – A series with the intricacies of human emotions, blended well with the social condition of the time

A Suitable Boy on Netflix is a beautiful adaptation from the novel: A Suitable Boy by Vikram Seth. The story talks about the situation after partition—but not directly. Neither does it have a direct narrative or monologue to convey the details about the backdrop of the tale. The story is also not based on a love story of revolt and revolution. This new series on Netflix is built on the structure of a common norm associated with Indian mothers, even in the twenty-first century. And that norm is none but getting their daughters settled through marriage and giving her hands to “a suitable boy”. And there starts the story.

Rupa Mehra continues her hunt for a man who will be worthy of her daughter Lata. Lata gets three “worthy” men to choose from— Kabir Durrani (a debonaire cricketer), Amit Chatterji (a poet with education in the UK) and Haresh Khanna (a tycoon in the shoemaking industry). Each of these men who form a sort of Swayamvar for Lata, hail from absolutely different family backdrops. Kabir Durrani’s father is a professor of Mathematics. Amit Chatterji, though a poet himself, hails from the city of Kolkata and a family of judges. On the other hand, Haresh Khanna, a man who sleeps business, eats business and even wears business, has a metallic heart bubbling with materialistic prosperity.

The fate takes its own turns with the entry of Maan Kapoor, a young lad living the drift culture of life. He is strongly infatuated to a courtesan, Saeeda Bai Firozabadi (Tabu). When the pythons of social skirmishes try to stifle Lata in the period of 1950s, she chooses to break through the shackles of society-imposed rules and regulations and finally acquire something which actually belongs to her—her own life.

Script

The script of A Suitable Boy complements the plot quite well. In terms of dialects and diction, the script defines the characters with good work of detailing. The script also upheld the justification of the special touch of makeup and costumes used in A Suitable Boy. There was punch, there was substance, and most importantly, there was context in the script.

Acting

Tanya Maniktala serves the best choice for portraying the daughter who barely survives to tolerate and then breakthrough the hues and cries and norms of a meddlesome mother. Her large and expressive eyes light up the screen with vivacious spirit of coming out of the common. Ishaan Khattar complements the role of Maan Kapoor in the same way. Tabu’s incandescent smile and husky voice texture lights up the lamp of enigma and cynical love on screen and makes her all the more desirable. Ram Kapoor is again back with his indelible acting skills and sculpts out the edges of the character of Mahesh Kapoor in the best possible way.

Music

Background scores have played a very important role in A Suitable Boy. This series has shown that good music can actually bring out the real colour of the situations. Alex Heffes and Anoushka Shankar undoubtedly did a very good job in leading the music team of A Suitable Boy.

Cinematography, Special Effects & Editing

Declan Quinn as the DOP of A Suitable Boy did a great job as far as the cinematography of the series is concerned. Nick Fenton and Tanupriya Sharma did a good work as the editors of A Suitable Boy.

Direction

Mira Nair and Shimit Amin deserve a big round of applaud for such a well-directed series. Their decision to make the novel stand as the backbone of the series serves to be the best. Their attention to the details and the way of bringing out the need for Lata to reject the decisions of her life taken by others truly brought out the real color of the series.
