Bandish Bandits Review – From the lovely rendered ragas to the corporate-driven amplifications

Bandish Bandits Amazon Prime Web Series draws out a clean clash between not the music but the musicians—not only through the cleverly weaved alliterated title in the shade of an oxymoron but also through the tenor and tone of the musical glory of this series. Sangeet Samrat Pandit Radhe Mohan Rathod is the most respected singer of Jodhpur, adored by His Highness and stands to be a custodian who is so crusty that he never spares even his family members when it comes to the authenticity and perfection of the delivery of Indian Classical Music from the Rathod Gharana.

Radhe, his grandson, is one of his most favourite disciples who craves to have the honour and responsibility of Gath Bandhan, a custom where the guru ties a sacred thread on his favourite disciple’s wrist and the disciple gains the responsibility and opportunity of learning and delivering the most important and special ragas of that Gharana. Things were going well, but Radhe was just close to perfection and not perfect. In order to lend a helping hand to his father to save the family from a grave financial peril, Radhe resorted to working as an accountant in the haveli of His Highness under Munshi ji.

Meanwhile, Tamanna Sharma, a creator-cum-performer of modern music or to be very specific commercialized music who aspires to collaborate with Queen Eli, a globally recognised pop star. Her taste in music strongly contrasts with Radhe. When she comes for a concert in Jodhpur which is organised by Kumar, a foul-mouthed yet close friend of Radhe, Radhes was compelled to give her a taste of his musical knowledge as she ridiculed Indian Classical Music in front of him.

Discovering the perfection in his notes, Radhe runs to his Pandit Ji, who agrees for his gathbandhan the next day. But on the day of Gath Bandhan, Radhe could not reach on time, although he tried his best. With just ten minutes of indiscipline, he lost it all. The next day he got ready for purification, knowing very well that if he fails in the purification test he will not be allowed to sing as well as will have to leave the house. With immense dedication and diligence, he manages to clear the test and after gathbandhan he discovers the financial crisis due to which his father is being threatened.

So he decides to agree to Tamanna’s offer of collaborating with her for one song, taking the promise that his voice should be digitally tweaked and no one should no about this collaboration. The plot heats up with the last secret getting revealed in the 10^th episode, and that too about the daughter-in-law of Rathod Haveli, Radhe’s mother.

Script

The script of Bandish Bandits Amazon Prime is one aspect that falls short in comparison with the other eccentric components of this wonderfully designed web series. The script has not got a good punch in it. Dialogues mostly are very predictable— “Tumhaari aawaz poori Desh ko sunna chahiye”. The name, the cinematography, even the atmosphere had music in it—but the script did not have adequate ingredients of music to substantiate the purpose. Discussions on tones, melodies, individual characteristics of ragas, and the discussion over the fusion music—all could have added a lot more to the script of Bandish Bandits Web Series.

Acting

Naseeruddin Shah served to be a perfect match for the character of Pandit Ji. He conveyed a lot of words through sheer silence and not overly manifested expressions. His disgust was as cold as his disapproval. His appreciation was as feeble as the streak of purple light in the evening sky. Classic performance enveloped in the garb of observation—well that’s Naseeruddin Shah for you in Bandish Bandits.

Ritwik does a very good job, in keeping up his perseverance even in the circumstances of dilemma. Rajesh Tailang and Amit Mistry were equally good in their parts. Sheeba Chaddha plays a great role as a supportive mother who never makes room to hide her son’s mistakes but also takes pride and compassion in his talent and diligence. Shreya Chaudhary’s attempt of delineating Tamanna is appreciable, but required a lot more variation from a stereotype contemporary musician or “electrician”.

Music

Bandish Bandits Amazon Prime is a show of music—where music is celebrated through different forms. A place where Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy stands with the placard of music becomes musical just by their very presence. While the classical ragas take the soul to the purest streams of authentic melody, the western numbers also do not fail to rock your feet with steps and movements. Music in Bandish Bandits was adequately balanced.

Cinematography, Special Effects & Editing

The cinematography of Bandish Bandits particularly was amazing with Sriram Ganapathy as the director of photography. It goes without saying that the grandeur of the sets and beauty of a location only gets justice in a film or web series when the DOP knows his or her job pretty well. Ajay Sharma as the editor also did a fairly good job.

Direction

Coming to the most important aspect of this series, the direction, Anand Tiwari did a good job. His attention to the details, his pattern of defining the characters, and his vision of the setup—everything gelled well with the plot and the screenplay. But there were areas where he could focus a lot more. Musical discussions, healthy debates on music could have been shown between Radhe and Tamanna. This would have broken the stereotype to some extent and make the script hold a lot of substance with tits and bits of information.

Furthermore, Tamanna is primarily a dinger or a song maker. She might be a good performer but it was unnecessary to make her come dressed in almost a glittery swimsuit in a concert. Rather, right through her appearance, she could have broken the notion of Radhe towards pop music. And Radhe, who detested this very arrangement from the core of his heart, should not have been enthralled by the flashes of disco lights in the concert or the interactive Tamanna on stage. He could have picked tunes from the music that was going on and could have found its resemblance with any of the ragas that he learned, probably Bhairav, the one he was practicing for a long time.
