Sons of The Soil review: Is it just about the game?
The baseline of the story of Amazon Prime docuseries Sons of The Soil: Jaipur Pink Panther will vicariously give the fans the thrill of watching live kabaddi action amidst the corona pandemic. The docuseries is pivoted around the titular kabaddi team owned by Bollywood star Abhishek Bachchan and follows them through the seventh season of the Pro Kabaddi League, beautifully balancing the personal and professional lives of the players as they embark on this wonderful yet dramatic journey.
This series in itself is unique owing to the nature of the indigenous sport it celebrates. More than playing the sport itself, the series deals in detail with how the minds of the young lads work out there under the scrutiny of the media limelight, given the popularity of the team’s owner. These are unassuming boys from very modest, mostly rural backgrounds trying their best to fit inside the glam and glitz setting. The docuseries is aptly harmonizing the wins and losses the individual players are facing alongside the thought process of the star who is actually running the show from behind.

The plot of the Sons of the Soil is a welcoming change for the nation that eats, breathes and sleeps cricket. It goes with the flow and does not make a fuss about a structured script but that is what ends up adding charm to this docuseries.
Script:
The script is unscripted, shot in an unusual format, making it seem real and endearing to the audience who have been starved of watching the Pink Panthers in action this year due to the pandemic. Designed to offer some enlightenment along with entertainment, the script builds upon all its characters including that of the team owner, his partner, the manager, the coach and of course its players.
Acting:
All the actors are brilliant in this docuseries – paying a solid tribute to the ancient Indian sport and explaining what difference Pro Kabaddi league has brought to the game and their lives. Bachchan, who enacts as the principal narrator of this series, serves his purpose excellently and breathes life into the team’s various characteristics that bring the players to life in the eyes of the audience.
Music:
The music by Gaurav Godkhindi renders a beautiful undertone to this short docuseries and aptly captures the change of mood from optimism in the beginning to melancholy in the end.
Cinematography, Special Effects & Editing:
Cinematography by Shreenivas Shirolkar, and editing by Vinod Salhotra, Pradeep Singh Negi, Jatin Dua, Nabeel Alvi, and Aseem Raza Ansari, Gaurav Arora do their job well and capture all the emotions within the team, through their amazing triumph, struggles, spirit, hope and most importantly their ‘never- say-die’ attitude.
Direction:
Director Alex Gale churns a realistic docuseries and brilliantly offloads the pressure of presenting a typical sports saga, showcasing the proceedings of the game as it is and how the game, already immensely popular and rooted in Indian roots, gets a grand corporate exposure.
