Scam 1992 Review –A well-researched, well-directed, impressive Financial Drama, with superbly impactful performances. One of the finest Web Series released in 2020. 

For a biopic that interesting to have waited for close to three decades to actually be made into a video content piece, it would have taken a lot of inattention! Ironically though, the personality of Harshad Mehta was exactly the opposite of this late biopic on his life. A quick decision maker and a flamboyant doer was what was Mehta known for, in the business circles in his hey days. What Scam 1992 Sony Liv Web Series does, is that it successfully chronicles Harshad’s ascent into a trustworthy Bull , fondly called the ‘Amitabh Bachchan of Stock Market’ and stamped as the “Big Bull”  by respected journalists like Sucheta Dalal. It further also showcases his downfall, regrets and learnings. The series also laments the basic envy that any successful person, big or small, has to face in a lifetime.

Born into a Gujarati family living in Mumbai, with a floundering textile business of his father, Harshad Mehta and his brother Ashwin Mehta got into Stock Trading in their youth. Understanding the market dynamics at the noisy Trade Floor and then implementing the same to start their own Consultancy with Zero Capital and Clients would have seemed daunting to many. But Harshad was a risk taker, and a shrewd trader. His ways were dubious and exploited a lot of existing loopholes in the system and regulations. Per Se he did not invent those loopholes, they were just smart trade practices which him and a lot of successful traders were already doing. But he was the one most flambuoyant and unapologetic of them all. And that perhaps did him in, more than once.

He dabbled successfully in Bombay Stock Exchange Market, explored the Cross-Bank Dealings, evaded Banks Receipts, embezzled Public Sector Undertakings and even Reserve Bank of India during ready forward deals and invented “Bankerage” and almost made it sound legal. A fancy term for bribes , that is. All in one fancy decade that had him walk down the corridors of money and then power as well, ruefully making him a scamsters who siphoned away INR 500 Crore from the Indian economy. His concerted downfall started when he alleged bribing the then PM, a charge that never got proven. All power clouds descended on ensuring that Harshad got so embroiled in court cases that anything else he does or says becomes questionable. And with that came lack of market trust and everything that goes along with it.

Pratik Gandhi , who plays Harshad Mehta in the Scam 1992 Sony Liv Web Series is a popular Gujarati Actor. This web Series is credited with bringing forth his talent to not just his community but to India and now to entire world. That he is a great actor who understood his character well, is needless to say. He is a find and viewers would love to see more of his work in future.

Satish Kaushik as the established Market Trader and Harshad Mehta contemporary is extremely believable and real. His acting is subtle and his mannerisms command acing his character to the T.

Another memorable character is Shreya Dhanwanthary, who essays the veteran financial journalist Sucheta Dalal. Investigative Journalism and Editorial backing makes you uncover a lot of hidden information. What you do of it, is almost addictive for its righteousness. Shreya as Sucheta and Sucheta herself, both did their job very well.

Screenplay and Story

The web series is based on a book (The Scam: Who Won, who lost, who got away) by Padma Shree Sucheta Dalal and her husband ( That time , her collegue), Debashis Basu. She was the Financial Editor of Times of India till 1998.

Harshad mehta Story on Sony Liv is very well executed and perhaps took a lot of time in actual ground research to get the facts simple and delivered in the manner that a common man would understand.

Harshad Mehta, disgraced, died of Heart ailment at 47 years of age, on December 31, 2001. He was on trial for 9 years until he died and had battled 72 criminal offences charge against him.

Director

Known for some path breaking, thought provoking work in the past ( Omerta, Shahid, Citylights, Aligarh), Hansal Mehta directed Scam 1992 with equivalent elan and finesse. Scam 1992 is etched as one of the best web series released in 2020 pandemic and boasts of impeccable casting, amazing understanding of the actual circumstances and their chronicled playout in reality, subtle depiction of power play, and of course bringing out some hidden gems like Pratik Gandhi ( Popular in Gujarati Theatre scene) into limelight.

Scam 1992 is well-researched and well-directed biopic which can be placed as among the best that 2020 has produced so far.
