Paurushpur Review – When laws become shackles, new laws are meant to be formulated.

Paurushpur Zee5+ ALT Balaji web series Paurashpur resides in the name itself. Paurashpur is the land of patriarchy. It has the flavour of dark desires that are borne from the bruises of oppression. In Paurashpur, it’s only the man who is heard. The hearts and bodies of women are shackled here. Post the husband’s death, wives are thrown into the burning pyre as Sati. When the husband is not at home, the wife has to wear a chastity belt. And if women even dare to break any of these rules, they get only one punishment, and that’s death. And the death is brought about by the members of the woman’s own family.

Paurushpur is a 16th century kingdom, ruled by Maharaj Bhadrapratap. Bhadrapratap is an old king with two young sons, Aditya and Ranveer, but his soul is captivated in the cage of lust and oppression. The series starts with the sixth marriage of Maharaj Bhadrapratap. Rani Meeravati is the eldest of all queens, and then Bhadrapratap married Nayantara after abducting her from her. Since then, every new queen married by Bhadrapratap goes missing from the royal palace and are not found ever again. However, Rani Meeravati retained in her position and focussed on finding a new queen for Bhadrapratap. Bhadrapratap had two sons. Aditya was married to Kusumlata, who had a hand maiden called Kamakshi. Ranveer was only fond of painting and had interest in art. He had fallen in love with Kala, a maid of the royal palace. Bhanu was the dance master of the royal palace. He had an affair with both Rani Meeravati and the elder son of Bhadrapratap. If there was one soul who could disrupt the mental peace of Bhadrapratap, then the soul was Boris. Boris was a eunuch and as per the practices in the past, a eunuch’s curse can destroy the entire lineage of even a king. Bhanu even had a love interest in Boris as well.

The story takes its own pace and different layers of the characters get revealed, Rani Meeravati being an extremely significant character in Paurashpur.

Paurushpur Trailer

Paurashpur is a good project as far as the execution is concerned. There are aspects who aided the building of the series as well as those which required more attention.

Script

Paurashpur is a series based on a specific period of time. Considering the period, script needed to have a lot more attention. There was no influence of the period on the diction or the dialogues of the characters. In those days, even discussion between two men had a certain boundary that was built on choice of words. The script was eventful, but not sufficiently substantiated.

Acting

Shilpe Shinde got a good scope to get into the skin of her character. But she did not utilise the opportunity to the fullest. Her expressions were monotonous throughout different situations. Even her body language was not very apt for Rani Meeravati. Milind Soman was fantastic. Although his work reflected little impact of Alaudding Khilji of Padmaavat, he did an exceptionally good job by portraying the different shades of his character in the best possible way. Shaheer Sheikh was completely under-utilised. After watching his impeccable performance in Mahabharat, it could have been a treat to the eyes to watch him again in such a good project. But probably Paurashpur didn’t have enough to offer him in terms of acting opportunities.

Music

Keeping in mind the backdrop of the series as well as the primary theme of revenge, a good degree of attention has been paid to the music department. Background scores could have been no more thrilling and substantial.

Cinematography, Special Effects & Editing

Paurashpur web series has got a good work of cinematography. The craft of camera projected by the directors of photography, Manoj Kumar Khatoi and Neelabh Kaul, is undoubtedly worthy of appreciation. Shachindra Vats as the editor also did a good job.

Direction

Shachindra Vats, the director of Paurashpur managed to pull through the series with allied efforts of casting members and screenplay. But what primarily lacked in the series is clarity of characterisation. Even after watching the series minutely it is not very easy to comprehend why would someone kill Boris in the last scene. A deeper insight to the characters could have taken Paurashpur to a greater level.
