Masaba Gupta, presently amongst countries top fashion stylists, is the daughter of veteran actress Neena Gupta and former West Indies cricketer, Vivian Richards. This show is a scripted and fictionalized account of mom-daughter pair Neena and Masaba Gupta’s real world where both play themselves and offer us a glimpse of their challenging life journey through careers in fashion and films. The show has drawn inspirations from the major part of their real lives.

Screenplay

The series contains a total of six episodes: 1. Rumour has it, 2. I got it from my Mamma 3. Man! I feel like a woman, 4. Bringing sexy back, 5. Work B**ch!, 6. Hot Mess.

The series narrates the many phases of the sensitive Masaba: the fashion stylist. The Story starts with a rumor indicated at Masaba’s divorce with her husband Vinay. This part is a resemblance to her real-life divorce with producer Madhu Mantena which remained in the news from the past two years. Additionally, Masaba gets caught in a hard time through a lack of backup by investors and creative block.

Her mother, Neena Gupta, now at the age of 60 and feeling left out from the cinema career despite being a celebrated and critically acclaimed actress for almost 3 decades. And that forces her to post an appeal for work on social media platform Instagram. This event talks much about Neena’s conflict in real life while expecting to get back to work.

Instagram, the third main lead in series plays a significant role in both mother-daughter duo’s life. For Neena, it helps banging one of the career-best film Badhai Ho, in 2018. And later on, successfully come back to the cinema world. (There is some footage from the film too.). Masaba announces her divorce on Instagram.

Story forwards exploring the relationship, complexity, peaks and valley in both the lives of the leads.

Performances

Certainly, it’s not a simple task to perform the fictionalized version of self for the camera. Neena Gupta is natural as always portraying every aspect of herself and treat to the eyes throughout. She flawlessly played herself – a strong-minded, outspoken yet professionally insecure woman.

On the other hand, Masaba in her debut seemed reasonable and camera friendly. Although in some sequences, she looked stuck marking the impression.

Both the leads are superbly supported by two main supporting casts, Neil Bhoopalam who has done an excellent job in his little appearances and Rytasha Rathore as Masaba‘s close friend convinced enough that she is a wonderful actress.

There are many surprising cameos by celebs including Kiara Advani, Farah Khan, Pooja Bedi, Mithila Palkar, Shibani Dandekar, Suchitra Pillai, Gajraj Rao. Which are fair eventually.

Cinematography & Editing

The Cinematographer Aditya Kapoor who previously gained recognition as an associate or second, third unit DOP for many films like Dharam Sankat, Aie Dil Hai Mushkil, and recently released web series Aarya. His camera is done remarkable work presenting two contrast sides, glamour as well as dull complexes through an informal approach. He didn’t try to experiment much.

Shruti Bora has given justice to her work as Editor.

Script

The writers lead by Director herself Sonam Nair, Nandini Gupta, Punya Arora, and Anupama Ramachandran delivers pleasant humor and gentle consternation throughout the series.

Direction

Director Sonam Nair treated this not so simple to direct script as a sitcom. And succeeds to drive audiences inside the glamour world and behind the covered aspects of celebrity lives.
