JL 50 Web Series Review – An exciting ,unique story plot from Indian web series perspective.

Sony Liv web series JL 50 opens with the panoramic scenes of North Bengal—a village filled with green valleys and tranquillity of nature, 125 kilometres away from Bagdogra in West Bengal. Kids there are engrossed in a playful mood, enjoying the sun in the verdant pastures. And then suddenly a giant shadow engulfs their happy afternoon. An aeroplane passes them and then crashes in the valley in front, on the river flowing down with force.

JL 50 Sony Liv is an important web series from the perspective of uniqueness. After quite a long time, foulmouthed goons and gangsters have taken a backseat while science is all in to create something new and different in Indian web series.

The flight contained 8 important delegates along with more than 50 people. As a result, pressure increased on the CBI to investigate when the flight AO20 goes missing for quite a long time. The CBI supervisor hands over this case to Shantanu, who along with his colleague Gauranga, takes the charge of investigating this matter. Initially, they were up for only one mystery: How did AO20 reach Bagdogra when even the farthest vicinity of this area doesn’t come in the route of the flight. But on reaching there, they are shocked to find that there is one more mystery to it. This flight has been missing since the past 35 years. It has only crashed now.

With the troughs and crests of science and time travel, science and fiction join hands together and that’s what stands to be the backbone of JL 50 Web Series.

“The Crash” is the first episode of JL 50. But the 4-episode series is also somewhere a crash—an abrupt landing of a good project with high possibilities.

Script

The script of JL 50 Sony Liv keeps the viewers glued to the show. The script doesn’t have a lot of substance in it. It is not overdosed with information. But the script has a sense of binding, a touch of connectivity that never lets the viewer drift away from the main plot.

Acting

Abhay Deol is all set to win hearts with his intense performance as well as the much unique coupling element of light-heartedness. His work has been always a true example of classic performance and method acting. JL 50 is also not an exception. Rajesh Sharma is a treat to watch. He plays the supporting cast so well that Shantanu seems incomplete without Gauranga. Pankaj Kapur and Piyush Mishra also did a fantastic job.

Music

Foster Black, Allister Martins, Prateek Nandan and Abhishek Walimbe have undoubtedly made one of the best teams to compose and arrange the background scores a web series like JL 50. It is a wrong notion that Sci-fi tales do not require good music. Just like romantic genre and thrillers, science also demands the viewers to stay glued to the scenes. And background scores is definitely one of the main components that contribute in keeping up the interest of the audience.

Cinematography, Special Effects & Editing

With Bradley Stuckel as the DOP, the cinematography of JL 50 enthralled the audience to the fullest. The way each and every shot was taken, from the terrace farms and mountain roads to the interior décor of the Lama rooms—cinematography was at its best for JL 50. Sushant Mishra’s delectable work as the editor of JL 50 took the already beautiful cinematography to a picturesque level.

Direction

Shailender Vyas did quite a good job as the director of JL 50. His approach of doing something different keeping the native flavour of India intact along with the Sci-fi theory is worthy of appreciation. But what made such a sufficiently fuelled project crash is the absence of logic and the untied loose ends of the story. The disturbed relationship of Shantanu’s personal life is just touched upon once and then left hanging. The eyes of a healthy survivor turn red with no reason. The climax breaks the rhythm of the film with unnecessary shower of bullets. The back-to-the-future concept, although uniquely beautiful, got ruined by the lack of vision and planning.
