Detective movie review – Tagore and Detective are not commonly co-existent.
Detective Bengali movie on Hoichoi is an adaptation from a story by Rabindranath Tagore. The story takes us to the Bengal during the era of Partition of Bengal when the oppressive British Government wanted to divide our motherland in the name of religion. Prof. Arunabho Chattopadhyay is a leader of one of the groups of freedom fighters, where two lovebirds, Sudhamukhi and Manmatha wanted to share their lives together. But the professor got to know about this and did not want this relationship to blossom for he believed that any form of love, other than the love for the country would come in way of their pledge.
When Sudhamukhi’s father wanted to stop her education and get her married, Sudhamukhi unknowingly ends up marrying a Government employee working in the detective agency, who is allegedly responsible for capturing the freedom fighters in India for the British Government. Mahimchandra, Sudhamukhi’s husband is ignorant of consummating his marriage and always remains engrossed in detective novels, especially The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes.
He is seldom interested in the petty cases that the Government asks him to solve. He wants something much more complicated and interesting, that would be nutritious to his brain and where he can utilize the knowledge that he has gathered from reading his favorite detective novels. Hutason, Mahim’s assistant follows him and sometimes even outwits him. Mahimchandra addresses him as Watson though.

Detective is not a story of patriotism; it is a story of hunger—the hunger of a detective for a case that would challenge his intelligence to a different level.
Script
The script of Detective doesn’t perfectly portray the period spoken about. But it highlights the characters in a very detailed way, much through the diction. A person of not so high level of education when reads detective novels from the West, will definitely know the terminologies. But his pronunciation will hamper. And that’s exactly what got elucidated in Detective through the character of Mahimchandra.
Acting
Ishaa Saha played Sudhamukhi in the best way possible. Her reactions towards the inexpressive ignorance of Mahimchandra, her silent love concealed in the shackles of the social boundaries—every single expression had its own charm and uniqueness. Trina Saha as Sneha, the young widow sister-in-law of Sudha was good in her part, but she seemed to be a little on the over-expressive side. Saheb Bhattacharjee did quite a commendable job as Manmatha—his dilemma is the best expression that got manifested on screen. Ambarish served to be the perfect Watson aka Hutashon by not following every order blindly but providing inputs at every step. Anirban Bhattacharya ruled the show as expected. For some time he took the viewers to the flashback of Bibaho Abhijan, but then he flawlessly proved that when Anirban Bhattacharya is the name, repetition is just not possible. The acting regiment was fabulous for Detective movie Hoichoi.
Music
Rabindranath Tagore is that name is not only Bengal but the entire world who doesn’t require any certification for his creativity and composition. The name, Rabindranath Tagore is a certification all by himself. The incredible music direction of Joy Sarkar makes the background score absolutely appropriate for every situation as well as for the title screens
Cinematography, Special Effects & Editing
The beautiful work of cinematography by Tuban brings back the flavor of Bengal to some extent through delectable work of camera, thereby giving an eccentric touch to Detective. The sharp yet consistent editing skills of Malay Laha also adds to the theme and agenda of the film.
Direction
Joydeep Mukherjee served to be a great director for Detective. He kept a good detailing of the scenes, thereby enhancing the characterization of the entire film. However, there was confusion—if he wanted to take only the concept from Tagore’s story, he could have placed it in a different period altogether. But a detective getting hold of a bulletproof jacket, in those days and that too in India becomes too far-fetched. The last scene had a lot of energy in it, that energy could be distributed uniformly throughout the film.
For some time, the pace was lagging, which was picked up when Mahim disguised himself and moved to the student hostel in order to keep an eye on Manmatha. However, the ending was satisfactory. When Hutashon asked Mahim whether he loved Sudhamukhi, a series of the brisk and brief moments of their encounters flashed by and the expressions of Mahim changed with swiftness. Once again it was restored that not everyone can be a Byomkesh Bakshy, not everyone can handle marriage and detection hand in hand.
