Coolie No.1 Review (2020) – Dear David Dhawan, the viewer has evolved since the 90’s. Even slapsticks need some original story now!
Can comedy formula of the 90’s evoke laughter in 2020? It’s been a bad year, let’s say, spare us the horror of making it worse. No, the repeat title of a hit 90’s film does not evoke nostalgia either. Was it even intended? Sorry, it missed that as well.
Paresh Rawal is an egoistic father, looking for richie rich husbands for his two daughters. A marriage agent, insulted by him, sees this trait in him and vows to ensure that his daughters get married with a man, anything but rich. Enter Raju (Varun Dhawan), a porter (Coolie) by profession and hoping to tie the knot at the earliest. Head over heels in love with Rawal’s daughter Sara ( Sara Ali Khan), Raju decides to take part in the plan.
And thus follows a slapstick comedy of drag and tomfoolery. Fudged double roles, fabricated rich father, Bungalow in Mumbai, son falling out with father and renouncing his wealth. We have seen all of this before. Don’t blame the viewer for the slam, accept that old wine can taste bad at times.

Performances
Sara is a doll. Pretty and lifeless. She dances well and looks great. Something happened to her dialogue delivery. Poor is an overstatement.
Coolie No.1 Varun Dhawan is passable, given that most of his job involved reprising Govida’s role from the 1995 Govinda Starrer of the same name. If 134 minute mimicry is your cup of tea, the boy deserves some credit. But if not, then save yourself the trouble of going through the Movie.
Paresh Rawal mouthing English dialogues seems forced. Never imagines for an actor as coomplished like him, any dialogue delivery would look so unfunny or compelled.
Most of the rest of the cast filled in their part in an unfunny movie claining to be a comedy in the first place.
Screenplay and Dialogues
The whole importance of comic timing and funny dialogues in a comedy movie cannot be over-emphasized. Coolie No. 1 2020 edition fails on these basic counts. Perhaps the viewers could have survived the lack of original story and recreation of the old, but why do it with rut of the mill dialogues.
Comic Dialogue delivery requires a timing. This part was done right by most except Sara, but the poorly written dialogues just failed to punch! Evoking laughter is a far stretch.
Music
Coolie No. 1 Songs 2020 were , well, recreated and a few tracks were original as well. Yes, it was fun to see the renewed versions with a new cast and set. But beyond that , even the music seemed to loose its sheen, and that is dangerous territory.
The background music seemed exaggerated and out of place at many times, esp since the screenplay missed punches and ceased to be funny beyond the 10th minute of the movie.
Direction
David Dhawan, you could do better for a film promoted as your 45Th or whatever. Why recreate something if you cant do better than the previous in the first place?
