Class of 83 Review – A story that required a lot more punch.

Class of 83 Netflix movie is based in 1983. The opening of the film is marked with a voice over from Aslam Khan. Khan is a cadet of the Police Academy of Nashik. Khan’s belief is that the force is like a coin. The two sides of the coin are law and order. According to him, each of these sides are inter-dependent and impacts the maintenance of the other. Khan, Shukla, Vardhe, Surve and Jadhav could not excel academically. But somehow, they managed to get the eyes of Dean Digvijay Singh, on them. Digvijay is a cop, rather a super cop who is known for taking out numerous gangsters. Due to his OUT OF THE LAW movements at the times of requirement, he gets a punishment posting at the police academy of Nashik.

Class of 83 Plot

The story unfolds in Mumbai, or the then ‘Bombay’. The city of dreams in those days was under the rule of gangsters and politicians. If the ruling party allied with one gang, the rival gang joined hands with the opposition. The result was nothing but an unruly situation in the heart of Maharashtra. Politicians blatantly followed what their allied gangs demanded. They provided money to the gangs while the gangs ensured their power and victory in elections.

Consequently, the cops had no role to play, except for doing what they were told to by their superiors who were under the pressure of the politicians. The graduates of the academy of Nashik were then deputed to Mumbai.

Very soon, a group of selected cops was formed to eliminate these gangsters one by one. With these not-so-efficient 5 Philosopher’s stones in the team, squabbles came up as they started competing against each other on the score of encounters. The gangs took advantage and even killed one of them.

Class of 83 is a story about how a group of not-the-best cops become the fate changers of the city of Mumbai.

Script

The script of Class of 83 (2020) complements the plot quite well. In terms of dialects and diction, the script defines the characters in a detailed way, with least possible dependence on makeup and costumes. But just like the lack of salt makes the best Biryani in the world seem tasteless, the lack of punch in the script lowered the possibilities of Class of 83.

Acting

It is good to watch Bobby Deol back to some serious and complex multi-dimensional role after quite a long time. While the character begins with a lot of complex emotions, gradually Singh becomes just a part of the story, rather subjected only to the storyline. On the other hand, Joy Sengupta’s bureaucratic performance as a high rank cop gave a new dimension to the film. Anup Soni’s delectable performance as the shrewd politician will never make the viewers feel that this man has been doing a series like Crime Patrol for years. Acting, by far, is the best aspect of Class of 83.

Music

Class of 83 movie, based on crime and action, demanded tunes of thrill and suspense in a better way. However, Viju Shah did quite a decent job in doing the music of the film.

Cinematography, Special Effects & Editing

Mario Poljac as the DOP of Class of 83 did a great job as far as the cinematography of the film is concerned. Nitin Baid and Manas Mittal did a good work as the editors of Class of 83(2020)

Direction

It is needless to say that Atul Sabharwal’s work as the director of Class of 83 demands appreciation. But with films like Shootout at Wadala and Phantom already made, a lot of more emotional thrust and intricacies in the overall narration was required. A large degree of cinematic flair was required to enhance the encounters with much more work of minute detailing. Framing dialogues which invite claps does not always make way for a script with punch. The situations arriving before, during and after the encounter missions could have given a not-so-shallow insight to the life of cops, entrusted with the duties of finishing off the gangsters.
