Chhalaang movie review: मैं teacher हूँ, सिखाने पे आऊं तो गधे को भी derby करवाऊं।

Watching Chhalaang movie online on Amazon can undoubtedly be one of the best experiences for every heart that craves for a good move in the monotony of work from home or the mask clad faces at work. Mahinder Hooda is a PTI, a trainer of Physical Education in the same school from where he passed out. He was a law aspirant, but did not have the tenacity to take up the subject as a challenge. So, he left midway and his dad made a request to the principal of the school, who adored Mahinder just as her own son. Shukla, one of Mahinder’s teachers in school, has now become a friend, philosopher and guide for Mahinder, who for some reason, avoids to talk to Usha, the principal of the school.

Mahinder along with some of his friends, one day visited a park where lovers generally met and in the spree of preserving the “culture of India”, his gang got the men lightly beaten, and Mahinder caught an elderly couple and ridiculed them. The man tried to explain that he was just there with his wife, but Mahinder did not pay any heed and got them clicked on the newspaper with himself.

Next day, a new computer teacher, Neelima, joined the school and co-incidentally she happened to be the daughter of the elderly couple ridiculed by Mahinder. However, Neelima’s friendship changed Mahinder and his outlook towards life. But then, there is no motivation without resistance. Inder Mohan Singh, a qualified Physical Education Trainer joined the school as sports became a compulsory subject for all students. Mahinder’s job was not at stake. He became Assistant PTI but with the same salary.

Besides his career, IM Singh gave a tough time to Mahinder also in his love life. It was shown for a brief time that Neelima got more inclined to Singh. But then, Mahinder killed the escapist in himself and decided to fight—fight through his students.

Chhalaang is a story of struggle , realisation and most importantly, the perseverance of a teacher.

Script

The script of Chhalaang stands out to be one of the finest scripts of contemporary Indian cinema. The soul aim of the script of Chhalaang is to portray the innate emotions of a man who got things in life just like that, and then did everything to win, when a tough resistance stood in front of him. The script had a lot of punch with perfect dose of humour, information and emotional fragments.

Acting

Although many viewers might find Chhalaang as an out and out Rajkumar Rao movie, the performance of both Nushrat Bharucha, Zeeshan and Saurab Shukla is more than just worthy of appreciation. Nushrat’s delivery is crisp and delectable. Rajkumar Rao, the star of the show plays varied shades of the same character with immense deftness.

Music

Vishal-Shekhar was amazing as usual in composing the music for Amazon Prime release Chhalaang. The lyrics literally spoke for the film, the theme and most importantly, the inner words of Mahinder’s character.

Cinematography, Special Effects & Editing

Cinematography by Eeshit Narain could have no better. With a lucid flow of the visuals and crisp editing by Akiv Ali and Chetan Solanki, Chhalaang is a fine sight to watch, or probably glare at.

Direction

Hansal Mehta’s directorial approach to the film was excellent. His choice of making Mahinder’s brother Bablu happily accepting IM Singh as the coach of the team against his brother was the best possible part. There was no farfetched sacrifice in that choice—there was love a brother and respect for a better qualified coach. And Bablu’s character, with his short screen space, actually played the role of a highly matured kid. Only one thing that didn’t suite the context was making the dogs bark even in the final round. Barking dogs were used to get the students active during practice. But if the same was required even in the finals, then that should not be considered a fair contest. Surprisingly, IM Singh raised no question against it. The actual equation between Neelima and IM Singh also keeps hanging. But the best lesson that got projected is: we all want our children to become Sourav Ganguly or Sania Mirza, but we don’t focus on being the correct parent for them. While the film itself drew reference of Dangal, the struggle of a coach and his determination, somewhere takes us to the tensed hockey grounds of Chak De! India on a lighter note.
