Atkan Chatkan movie review – An old wine in a new bottle

The story of Zee5 originals production Atkan Chatkan Zee5 new movie 2020 is the story of a boy called Guddu, who takes it straight from the hand pump lanes of a little village of Jamuniya and then makes it to the top. Guddu’s mother is absent and his father, once a talented Pakhawaj player is now an alcoholic. Guddu has no choice but to earn money by working in a tea stall. He shares his wishes with his little younger sister Lata and his friend, Madhav.

Guddu is shown to have a keen interest in music. In Madhav’s words, Guddu didn’t get into music but music got into him. He has the ability to identify the rhythm, the flavour of music even in the common and ordinary activities of the day. Even when wheat is husked, he can tune to that sound as well.

On the other hand, besides Madhav’s passion for books and his immense thirst for knowledge, he also is a very good vocalist. With the turn of events, Guddu and Madhav meet Mithi and Chuttan and then they decide to form a band using paraphernalia from the scrapyards to make their own instruments. With the popular phrase of Atkan Chatkan Dahi Chatakan in Hindi, they name their band Atkan Chatakan.

With street shows and relentless hunger for music, one day Atkan Chatkan 2020 comes in the eyes of the principal of Tansen Mahavidyalay. He is frustrated of losing the competition organised by their own academy every year with participants who are not very serious. Fate takes its own turn and team Atkan Chatkan gets a chance to get enrolled in the academy, and surprisingly enough Guddu’s mother becomes their teacher unofficially.

Atkan Chatkan new movie revolves around a good theme, but pays least attention to it and most to the rags-to-riches journey which in today’s date has become a concept worked upon by countless content creators.

Script

The script of Atkan Chatkan movie Zee5 holds no good reason of being called infallible. The diction presented by both the boys as well as the adults is quite backdated. Conversations among the students of the Tansen Mahavidyalay could have been worked upon and presented in quite a different way. But the focus on these aspects was quite low. The script ran on the track of predictability, with a week narrative of flashback, where only two lines in the beginning and two lines in the end marked that it is a story being told.

Acting

Lydian’s work as Guddu is undoubtedly commendable. But 10 years after a film like Slumdog Millionaire, Guddu as a character fails to trigger emotions in the viewer’s eyes. Yash did a great job as Madhav—his effort of maintaining peace in the team was expressed well. But with minimal scope of performance, Sachin Chaudhary did wonders as Chuttan. His acting was so natural and spontaneous, that he seemed to be just a random boy who got beatings first and words later. The hardships that he faced since childhood reflected well on his life and thus, Chuttan, although part of the supporting cast, gave this utterly predictable and unidirectional project some colour of variation.

Music

Under the supervision of Shivamani, the music of Atkan Chatkan should have emerged as the primary substance or governing element of the movie. Except for the part of Atkan Chatkan lyrics, the music of the film had taken a backseat. Not only that the composition required more attention, the presentation of the making and working on the musical instruments of the band—that too required a lot more detailing.    

Cinematography, Special Effects & Editing

With Subranshu Das as the DOP, the work of camera surprisingly did not make a mark for the audience. With customized instruments as one of the subjects, a lot more could have been done for the cinematography of the film. However, Fernandes Lionel did a good job as the editor of Atkan Chatkan movie 2020.

Direction

Shiv Hare did pretty well as far as his directional debut is concerned in Atkan Chatkan. His idea of infusing music with the movements of the character of Guddu was good. But that did not become an inseparable part of his character. Initially Guddu was too much into music—his senses were strong and receptive to the tunes of nature. But gradually, this strong sensation had taken a backseat. Being an AR Rahman presentation, Atkan Chatkan should have been studded with elements of music throughout the film. Nevertheless, if child performance is what you love to look at, Atkan Chatkan can be recommended with some bonus of good music.
