Gunjan Saxena movie review: A collection of good performances with the lack of punch.

Gunjan Saxena movie on Netflix is a biopic made with a lot of power and passion. The central theme and character of the story focusses on the Flight Lieutenant Gunjan Saxena, an Indian Air Force (IAF) officer. Post her joining in the year of 1994, she became a veteran within just 5 years of her service in the Kargil War. In addition to that, Gunjan Saxena became the very first woman to receive Shaurya Chakra.

While beginning to watch Gunjan Saxena Movie online, the viewer gets to see a little Gunjan travelling on an aeroplane, who is more fascinated by the getup and working style of the pilot than the outside scenes of clouds and the sky, when an air hostess takes her to the cockpit. She desired to be a pilot since then, but chose to become an air force pilot due to the financial instability in her family. Coming out with flying colours for both the written as well as the aptitude test, Gunjan worked really hard to gain her physical fitness, but on landing up the male-dominated squadron, she found it tough to adjust with no special facility but the “special treatment” that she received from her male colleagues. She’s shown to excel both in written tests as well as aptitude exams. But she never fails to keep up her perseverance and gains the place for the best air force pilot of the year after completing her first rescue mission.

Although the film is an all Gunjan film completely, the eternal bond between the father and the daughter of the story takes the tale to a different level. Gunjan’s father supports him in every possible way. In those days, he did never resort to misogyny and was always there for Gunjan whenever she developed any sort of doubt in her mind regarding whatever she was doing. The focus on this bond brings the real life of the film.

Gunjan Saxena Movie Cast

  • Pankaj Tripathi
  • Angad Bedi

  • Vineet Kumar Singh
  • Manav Vij

Gunjan Saxena is a story of inspiration. It takes it from the alleys of real life than just a motivational speech given on stage.

Script: The script of Gunjan Saxena lacks the punch in it. The story lacks powerful narrative that could have complemented the high-level performances well enough. The dialogues failed to somewhat deliver the real flavour this point source of immense motivation that should have paved its way through the script.

Acting:

Janhvi Kapoor made Gunjan Saxena come out of the screen and stand right in front of you. Her expressions did what the script could not, her reactions did what the character actually demanded. She was somewhat shaky in parts of the film but the Dhadak debut maker never lost her restraint and resort to melodrama. Pankaj Tripathi on the other hand elucidated the character of Gunjan’s supportive father with grace and understanding. Unlike his regular roles, he depicted the placid corner of Gunjan’s story in a good way. Angad Bedi also did a great job as the brother of Gunjan.

Music: With Vatsal Chevli, John Stewart Eduri and Aftab Khanas as the souls behind the music of the Gunjan Saxena release on Netflix, background scores had to be at their best and so were they.

Cinematography, Special Effects & Editing:

Manush Nandan as the DOP of Gunjan Saxena gave a new eye to the viewers with such eclectic cinematography. Nitin Baid also did a good work as the editor of Gunjan Saxena.

Direction: Sharan Sharma’s work as the director of Gunjan Saxena is worthy of appreciation. But his way of narrating an already known story is quite a one-track journey. The story of Gunjan’s struggle, who had a supportive family, but a somewhat scornful brother, a patriarchal ambiance at her workplace with the burden of financial perils and inspiration to work for the love of her country—the story demanded a much better narrative with some more power in the script. Nevertheless, Gunjan Sharma continues to stand as a fine movie made, thereby establishing that sometimes real talent is not dependant on any popular “-ism” in anywhere on earth. Real talent just comes and should always be appreciated, irrespective of its origin and circumstantial conditions.
