Mohomaya Web Series stands to be an extremely bewitching psychological thriller, with an unusual emphasis on the much usual bond between a mother and a son. What happens when a son has to take care of her mother right from his school days? And that too not by supporting her with food or money, but by ensuring that she stays alive and doesn’t resort to suicide. Well, a mother is still way ahead of her son. She knows the psychology of her son and breaks through all shackles of protection and embraces death. But little does she pay heed to that her negligence and her husbands animality had made the childhood of their son imprisoned for life—behind the bars of a psychological disorder.

Aruna is a Bengali mother, a homemaker to her loving husband and three children—her eldest son Mimo is out in Bangalore for his job, her younger son Miki is leaving for abroad right after Diwali and her youngest daughter Mithi, although will be continuing with her college from home, is far busy in her world with friends and academics. But that doesn’t mean that her children don’t love their parents. Yet there’s a room of void in Aruna’s life. Soon after Miki leaves for abroad, his childhood friend Rishi ends up staying in their house as a paying guest. Mithi is clearly interested in him, but Rishi is only interested in experiencing the mother-son relationship between Aruna and himself. He is super-protective about Aruna and designs sarees and jewellery, which are loved by Aruna. Things begin on the smoother end until Rishi’s subconscious memories keep coming back, where his mom, Maya, was tortured by his dad every night for the latter was interested in hard sex. A sadist he was, tying Maya to a chair and demonstrating sex with whipping and caning with other ladies who could satisfy him the way he needed. But Maya was much on the gentler side, for whom sex was divine and animalic. And when her husband left the family, she became prone to suicidal thoughts and her son Rishi, who was just a school kid then, tied her up as well to the bed for nearly 4-5 days, so that she is unable to harm herself. But then, fate found its way to tragedy.

Script

The script of the series just goes with the flow. It doesn’t have quotations from books, it doesn’t have lines from poetry. It is real—just from the kitchen of Bengal, packed with the flavour of a home—a home where the kids are stepping out for jobs and betterment in life, keeping behind parents lonely, longing for their kids to return on leaves.

Acting

Swastika Mukherjee is now working like a shallot. The layers of her talent are blooming with every passing film and series that comes her way. The Paatal Lok actress gives a new life to the character of Aruna from chewing betel leaves to calling out the names of her kids just like a Bengali mom would do when the children do not wake up even at 10 in the morning. Bengali moms are quintessentially observant of their children’s behaviour, companions and acquaintances. That colour of character has been assembled in the most beautiful way by Swastika Mukherjee in Mohomaya. The next in queue is undoubtedly Ananya Chatterjee. With her intellectual performance in Meghe Dhaka Tara and desirable elegance in Abohoman, Ananya has conquered the hearts of many countless times. And here, she forms the Maya of Mohomaya. In the same series, this lady can actually make you empathize for her and also send a stream of piercing ice down your spinal cord. She is the key; she is the fine perforated membrane between the reality and dreamland of Rishi’s sub-conscious and that’s what made her performance touch the pinnacle of excellence in Mohomaya. With two ladies demonstrating absolute talent with the sword of determination and performance, Sujan Mukherjee goes even better as a supporting character of Aruna’s husband. His treatment to his daughter is significantly different from the son, but that again doesn’t mean at all that he treats them with difference. Sujan Mukherjee celebrates balance in Mohomaya. As a debut, Bipul Patra gave his heart and soul to the character of Rishi. With a serene, innocent smile, his work even grew better, thereby establishing a sharp contrast with his deeds under the influence of his psychological disorder.

Music

Amit-Ishan’s work as the music composer took to the thrill-glazed rich sauce of background scores that bring out the smoky flavour of dark, cynical character that Mohomaya resembles as a series.

Cinematography, Special Effects & Editing

Cinematography in the Hoichoi original productions Mohomaya is by far the best of Tuban and definitely one of the best works of camera that has been projected on Hoichoi. The bursting of bulbs, the movement of eyeballs and fingers captured so well that even where the scene of a sadist is on, the viewers actually enter that dark sphere of life, where even the most divine experience on earth is filled with the fear of uncertainty. Editing by Rabiranjan Maitra reflected an exotic visual experience for the audience starting from the excellent design of the title screens to the exquisite balance of light and shade maintained throughout.

Direction

Kamaleswar Mukherjee is a man of inconsistent yet extra-ordinary work of creativity. Looking back, it sometimes gets very difficult to mentally digest that he is the same chef from whose kitchen Amazon Obhijaan and Chaader Pahar can come in peaceful co-existence with gems like Meghe Dhaka Tara and Khawto. With his directorial debut through Mohomaya in the world of OTT, Kamaleswar is now again back to the gems that he is capable of discovering and polishing them out with an inherent shine. The best part of the series is not the thrill that’s persistent. The best part of the series is a mother keeping close eye effortlessly on her children, so much so, that she doesn’t even fail to capture that her son’s girlfriend Boishali had come to the house with her lipstick on but there was no trace of it just before sitting for dinner. Well, that’s the eye of a Bengali mom. Mohomaya recultivates motherhood in the garb of a psychological thriller. With Sahana Dutta as a brilliant creative director, the series takes its pace and the next season is eagerly awaited in the month of June, 2021.
