Koshtoneer Movie Review – A fragment of family drama hung in suspension

Koshtoneer Bengali movie on Hoichoi is a movie based in the city of Dhaka, Bangladesh. Shamsul Islam Chowdhury is a successful businessman living in the heart of Bangladesh, in the city of Dhaka. He has 5 children—two daughters and three sons. The eldest son of the family Rizwan tries to support Shamsul in his business, but Shamsul often looks down upon him and keeps him out of the crucial decisions of the company. There’s no discussion between father and son. There’s only a unidirectional flow of instructions from father to son.

The eldest daughter of the family, Rizwana, has been made to get married at the age of 16, and since then living a loveless and childless married life with her husband least connected to the family.

The middle son, Rayhan is exactly opposite of Shamsul. Brilliant results and a passion for logic and justification—Rayhan is an active communist who stands against all capitalists who cheat people and establish themselves in the upper sections of the society. He is the only one in the family who can talk back to his father and that too face to face.

Rashna, the youngest daughter of the family is about to get married in the next one month. Ridwan, the youngest son has completed his preliminary education in Islamic Studies in Chennai. There he had come in contact of a person who is connected to a dangerous group—a group that converts young students to terrorists in the name of Jihad. On his return to Dhaka, Ridwan gets into contact with Kabir Bhai, member of the same team. But soon he realises that the activities performed in this group are not in favour of Islam—because no religion can support violence of any order and kind. Soon Rayhan gets to know Ridwan has been trapped and saves him from getting into further trouble. Meanwhile, Rashna doesn’t want to get married to her fiancé Shayor because she wants to concentrate more on her start up business.

In the middle of this turmoil, Rayhan gets arrested in charge of a politically motivated false case. Rashna decides to confront her father and explain him that whatever he did for his children, might be correct from his point of view. But he did not give importance to what his children actually wanted in life. His thoughts kept on getting imposed on them. Except for Rayhan, all other children of Shamsul were struggling with valuing their father’s decisions and desires. Shamsul understood his flaws and got Rayhan back using his connections. The family is shown to live happily after that.

Koshtoneer is a piece of family drama that doesn’t stand out to be very uncommon. With a mild substance but strong setup, the film lacks deftness in execution.

Script

The script of Koshtoneer is ordinary and lacks depth. Conversations between any pair of characters seem to be very artificial. Given the background of Rayhan’s character, a little more depth and knowledge could have been infused in his dialogues at least.

Acting

Tariq Anam Khan had a good command over his character, but his expression was monotonous. Even when he was pondering upon his deeds and decisions towards the end of the film, there was no major change in his body language. Runa Khan did a good justice to her role—she essentially brought out the flavour of a middle-aged frustrated woman who could get so much in life but life just escaped her fist like the grains of sand. Shamol Maola also did a good job as Rayhan. He tried to bring out the real colour of the character through his eyes. But he was under-utilised to some extent in Koshtoneer.

Music

Background scores by Arafat Mohsin Nidhi suited the sequences of the film at places. But then again, it was mostly monotonous and didn’t add a good degree of seasoning to the film.

Cinematography, Special Effects & Editing

Quality of camera work was good in Koshtoneer. However, a little more attention to the scenic shots was expected from DOP Tanveer Anzum. Romjan Ali did a great job as the editor of Koshtoneer.

Direction

Ashfaque Nipun’s directorial approach towards Koshtoneer lacked introspection to some level. When Kabir Bhai was beaten up by Rayhan, at least one or two goons should have come in his way if not at that point of time, but even after Rayhan and Ridwan returned. A father who gets his daughter married at 16 without any concern for her consent, simply starts brooding over his deeds when another daughter of his questions him—too farfetched and out of context. A detailed overview towards capitalism or communism was missing from the film. After realising his mistakes, they in which Shamsul atoned for them could have been shown with more elaboration.

Overall, Koshtoneer is a good time pass, but not very worthy of the time.
