Tribhanga Movie Review – Tribhanga a reassessment of life, a cinematic retreat to the curtain call.

Tribhanga on Netflix is a question of ideologies that is expressed primarily through women of three generations—Nayantara, Anuradha and Masha. Nayantara has immense passion for writing wanted to ink out her journey of life, voicing her disagreement against the acceptance of social shackles that are imposed on women in different forms and shapes. But her passion towards her work does not go well with her mother-in-law as well as her chauvinist husband and she chooses to step out, with her children—Anuradha and Robindro.

Anuradha becomes a celebrated Odissi artist, who has controversies following her like her own shadow. She never believes in marriage and is extremely short-tempered with slangs blurted out every now and then. She has a daughter named Masha from her live-in Russian boyfriend, and the man is obviously out of picture now. Robindro takes a spiritual approach to lead his life. He has an unadulterated, unapologetic and unconditional love for her sister Anu. Both the siblings hate their mom so much so, that Nayantara becomes Nayan for her children. But when Nayantara suffers a brain stroke and transcends to the state of coma, Nayantara and Robindro are on the verge of questioning their own ways of dealing with life, and so does Masha.

Tribhanga is an important dance posture in Odissi. It is not technically correct to tag a dance pose as lustful or sensuous, but the grace in Tribhanga undoubtedly lights up a lamp of desire in the hearts of the opposite gender.

Tribhanga has a sour tinge of foul-mouthed vibrance, but it pulls of well with the balanced presentation.

Script

The script of Tribhanga complements the plot quite well. In terms of dialects and diction, the script defines the characters with good work of detailing. The script also upheld the justification of the special touch of makeup and costumes used in Tribhanga. There was punch, there was substance, and most importantly, there was context in the script.

Acting

While Kunaal Roy Kapur never fails to amaze us with his strong theatrical foundation, Manav Gohil did a great job in portraying the depth of the shades of his character. Kanwaljeet Singh was a treat to the eyes. Tanvi Azmi was excellent in projecting the contrasting hues of Nayantara and actually spoke a lot through her silent acting at places. Mithila Palkar was stood to be an emblem of vivacity with a copious approach to Masha. Kajol came as a surprise—her command over the character was worthy of appreciation. However, in stead of stills, had Kajol been really dabbed into Odissi and at least some glimpses of her performance were visible in the film, Tribhanga probably would have created history.

Music

The music of Tribhanga was surprisingly nothing on the note of what we call extra-ordinary. A little more attention could have aided in bringing out the flavour of the film.

Cinematography, Special Effects & Editing

The cinematography of Tribhanga is more than just excellent. The angles of camera used to take shots, the layering of scenes—everything was planned and executed beautifully. Sharpness in editing also aided the projection of a beautiful graphical presentation of Tribhanga.

Direction

Renuka Shahane had a unique approach as the director of the Tribhanga film on Netflix 2021. Instead of telling a story through an exotic screenplay, she actually asked questions to the audience. The viewers have no other choice but to question their inner self which is judgemental to the actions of the other people. Tribhanga pulls off well, with a crisp touch of metaphor and self-assessment.
