Serious Men movie review – The hattrick success of Nawazuddin Siddiqui on Netflix. Turns the age long cast prejudice inside out. 

Serious Men Netflix talks about Ayyan Mani who is a Dalit personnel working for a Brahmin scientist. Even in these days, social discrimination is a big issue. Being a Dalit, it is very tough for Ayyan Mani to get the minimum respect that a “normal” human being of his calibre deserves. But when things spill over the brim, he decides to revolt, in his very own way. Despite being a Dalit, his 10-year-old son is a genius. And the struggle of Ayyan Dalit starts right there—to get the genius of his son appear before the world to get appreciated. The metaphorical prison of the city of Mumbai traps Ayyan. This time the common man is not a sweet fellow. This time the common man is filled with fury. He is rough and he is desperate. When the society expects Ayyan to stay within the “limits” of his social status, he comes out with a lot of rage in him and hence his character is no more a sugar doll. He is rather a form of explosion; whose anger and anguish form the structure of the story of Serious Men.

Script

The script of Serious Men bears a lot of punch in it. A couple of phrases get repeated for quite a number of times. But that doesn’t hamper the purpose of the film. In fact, it strengthens it. The motive of Ayyan stays clear with a perfect portrayal of his character through the dialogues and diction.

Acting

Nawaz and Netflix make a great combo—starting from Sacred Games to Serious Men, the duo has worked out very well. It is needless to say that how well Nawazuddin Siddiqui fits into any character that comes his way. It goes without saying that Serious Men Netflix new movie 2020 is of course no exception. This “unconventional”-looking actor has proved to be a gem in the past and his legacy of genius continues through all of his performances till date. Indira Tiwari and Sanjay Narvekar also did a great job.

Music

It is difficult to say that music and background scores played a very big role in the film. With Karel Antonín as the music director, some more exposure could have been given to music in Serious Men.

Cinematography, Special Effects & Editing

Alexander Surkala served as the perfect DOP for Serious Men. A lot of cinematographic moments were beautifully emphasized. Moreover, Atanu Mukherjee  also did an excellent job as far as the editing of the film is concerned.

Direction

Sudhir Mishra deserves a big round of applauds for such a well-directed film. His perception of the common man has actually changed in a good way over the decades. His attention to detail and the way of bringing out the fury in Ayyan taking birth from humiliation since ages is absolutely amazing and perfectly contextual. There is no doubt that Serious Men is one of the best films made by Sudhir Mishra.
