Tarader Sesh Tarpon Review – Let this be my parting word.

Hoichoi documentary web series Tarader Sesh Tarpon is such a celebration of beauty that the stars to whom these offerings have been made, would have been delighted if they were given this token of love during their lifetime.

Some forgotten, some less talked of and some of the most popular stars of Bengal—whose life inspired people, whose mistakes served as lessons to the mass, and whose contribution to the respective worlds of their profession, make them TARA meaning STAR in Bengali. But did all of these stalwarts receive what they actually deserved? Did all of these Stars get the best of the light from the Sun that they once reflected in their own fields? Well, let’s take a look at who became the ultimate Karna and who left as Abhimanyu.

Subimal aka Chuni Goswami, the Prince of Bengali Football—this man believed in absolute genius and was none but a genius himself. He seldom focussed on theory; his main genre was the ground and the ball and that was his world. While Little Master Tendulkar became a star at 15, the star in Chuni Goswami was recognised when he was just 10. The idol of Mohunbagan left silently, with no pompous journey to the stadium, which was celebrated by his son as part of his last wish.

PK Banerjee—the counterpart of Chuni Goswami, who struggled a lot in a congested dormitory with the job-seeking youth of Calcutta in his beginning days. Chuni and PK were best of friends, but equally strong in opposition. While Chuni’s work was based on skills and presence of mind, PK as a footballer was more prolific as a coach who believed in Vocal Tonic and could spread motivation in the heart of each and every player.

Rituparno Ghosh—this man is a genre in himself. A director who can analogize the desire of a widow to have tea and the need of a widow to have her sexual desires fulfilled. A director who can visualize Lord Madon of Chitrangada as a cosmetic surgeon—that same Rituparno Ghosh fell prey to his own creation. Arekti Premer Golpo—he was bedecked as a woman with jewellery and makeup, and somewhere he identified the woman in himself with the character. As soon as the makeup went away, Rituparno lost the woman. He tried and he tried, but all his attempts went in vain. And that search for that woman dragged Rituparno to the lanes of no return. We lost this genius, we lost this creator who conveyed our words, to ourselves, in our way.

Gopal Krishna Bose—the Karna of Indian Cricket. He was a player of absolute merit, but always kept his spinal chord upright, with no compromise even before the big shots of Indian Cricket during his time. But what did life give him? Well, if there was no teacher, other professions would cease to exist. And for sports, that position was enthroned by the Coach. Gopal Krishna Bose gifted players like Lakshmi Ratan Shukla to Indian Cricket through his incredible cricket coaching and left this land of unfairness, silently.

Sunil Gangopadhyay—the Neellohit of Bengal, is known to have the second highest number of literary works (after Tagore) whose exact count is still unknown to us even after years of his demise. The man who created thrill in the garb of adventure, the man you celebrated youth with his incredible power to portray love and the deepest emotions of women. Adored by a number of women during his lifetime, Sunil’s wife reminisces how happy she felt when she realised that her widowhood is emotionally shared by a wide range of women across Bengal (if not the world).

Sushant Singh Rajput—a much talked about topic these days. In the game of pointing fingers and #Justice4SSR, somewhere we have forgotten to lament his death, to realise the fact that a bright young lad who was an out and out hard worker, is no more. A balanced portrayal of his story perhaps for the first time on air—Tarader Shesh Tarpon episode 6.

Ajay Bose—the Uttam Kumar of Bengali commentary. Commentary is an art; it is that source where the audience from remote locations can actually visualize the matches right in front of them. Ajay Bose was not just a commentator; he was also an artist. He used words that came out from the spring of Bengali literature but had the seasoning of technical details so much so, that Yugantar, a popular Bengali daily, had a surge in sale during the football season to read the words of radio commentator cum journalist, Ajay Bose.

“Dead people receive more flowers than the living ones. This is because regret is greater than gratitude”—Tarader Shesh Tarpon Hoichoi is an honest and balanced attempt made by Gautam Bhattacharya, an eminent sports journalist of Bengal, the former Associate Editor of Ananda Bazar Patrika and currently the Joint Editor of the Bengali language daily Sangbad Pratidin.

Script and Performance

The script of Tarader Shesh Tarpon is filled with information and glazed beautifully with the nectar of rich literature. The work of Gautam Bhattacharya as the creative director also is worthy of appreciation.

Music

With Indraadip Das Gupta as the man behind music, the combination of scenes with Tagore songs (vocal and instrumental), made a grave mark. Sound designing and synchronisation by Amit Kumar Dutta were equally impeccable.

Cinematography, Special Effects & Editing

Aalok Maiti as the DOP and Moloy Laha as the editor of Tarader Shesh Tarpan did a splendid job in putting together the visuals of this series with beauty at its best. Blending of scenes, layering of camera and of course the charm of special effects—the visuals of Tarader Shesh Tarpon is an eclectic example of profound simplicity. What swept off the breath of the audience was the amazing work of graphics by Anamitra Pal. Title screens, fonts of the text, background visuals and of course animation work—a big round of applauds should go to the graphics team for such a detailed, classy and serene work.

Direction

With the creative director as Gautam Bhattacharya, Aritra Mukherjee did an excellent job as the director of Tarader Shesh Tarpon Hoichoi. Amidst an excellent concept, idea and execution, a little frowning is bound to set in when Sushant Singh Rajput is squeezed between Sunil Gangopadhyay and Ajay Bose. There’s no doubt regarding Sushant’s stardom and the impact of his demise. But does it anyhow go with the pristine pure Bengali aroma that prevails through the remaining episodes. The only negative 0.5 in the rating is due to the question: Was Sushant really important in Tarader Shesh Tarpon, or was it actually a somewhat TRP raiser as it is a “trending” topic these days.
