Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare -A strong representation of female desire for emotional emancipation
Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare Netflix was first premiered at the Busan International film festival in 2019 and it was released on Netflix. The film is an open look at the so-called happy marriages for society but the reality is opposite in the backstage. The film deeply portrays how difficult it is for a girl to live according to her will in a patriarchal society. It mainly focuses on the life of two women Kajal (played by Bhumi Pednekar), a free-spirited girl, and Dolly (played by Konkana Sen), a typical Indian housewife who adores her husband.
The story of the film is cohesive and much familiar for the audience, the plot is not that intriguing but yet it touches us at some points with its relatability with the daily life of Indian folks.
Two cousin sisters Kajal and Dolly try to find happiness in their life by discovering themselves. Dolly lives in Greater Noida with her husband Amit (played by Amir Bashir). She is not having a happy marriage and also an unsatisfactory sexual life. Things take a complete turn when Kajal comes to Noida to live with Dolly. Kajal who is born and brought up in a lower-middle-class family in Bihar finds the new city rejuvenating her. But she soon starts to get sexual harassment from Amit and this makes Kajal transform to Kitty and moves out to live an independent life in Noida. She joins a call center and works as a cyber lover, this leads to the encounter of Pradeep (played by Vikrant Massey). The film then moves through a series of events and also many subplots are showcasing the bond of Dolly and her son.

Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Trailer
The trailer itself gives an idea on how the director tries to explore the depressed layers of our Indian Society which considers women as sexual puppets or reproductive machinery. The film openly discusses the desires and needs that women yearn for both mentally and physically. It also deals with the sexual thirst and scarcity of satisfaction in a male-dominated society. Also, the scene of Kajal and her mother reveals the liberty that women wish to have. Restrictions and repressions make living miserable and annoying, this idea is well established throughout the film. Some scenes are irrelevant to the plot which could be considered as fillers.
Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamkte Sitare- Direction and Screenplay
Alankrita Srivastava who is well known for her film ‘Lipstick Under My Burkha’ has taken the effort to strongly express the uselessness of the traditional male dominating belief systems and moral conditioning. The cheesy lines and awkward unwanted sex scenes cut down its quality to be a family entertainer. The financial troubles that Dolly faces to pay her EMI is a reflection of common folks of our society. These facts make the film a relatable one. Though the film has several shortcomings in the script, it comes with the voice that many mothers, wives, or even teenage girls hesitate to talk about.

Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Full movie available on Netflix
Both Pednekar and Sen Sharma steal the screen with their stellar performances. The saga of the cousin sisters will surely touch our hearts. Vikrant Massey had a limited screen time still he has done complete justice to his character. Amol Parasher who plays the role of Usman, a delivery boy, and the love interest of Dolly also show satisfactory performance. Bashir hits the point in digging deep into an abusive husband which is quite common in our patriarchal society.
As the title itself suggests, the shine of stars in darkness is a symbolic representation of how the suppressed community rises from ignorance. The frustration, ambition, and sexual drive that modern society faces are effectively presented in the whole storyline. The open and honest conversations between the female leads are thought-provoking. Overallm the film can engage you and can feel a spark on the need for equality in our society.
