Tiki Taka movie review – সব খেলার সেরা বাঙালীর তুমি ফুটবল (You are the best of all games of Bengal)

The story of Zee5 originals production Tiki Taka Zee5 movie is a tale that is woven around the craze for football in the heart of Bengal, Kolkata. The story focuses on a different series of continuous comedy of errors, taking us to the errors of the Uttam Kumar starrer Bhranti Bilash or the Jaya Bhaduri starrer Dhonni Meye ages back. What happens when a common man, a taxi driver outsmarts the elite and takes an attempt to save his “brother” from the clutches of a mighty drug lord in the alleys of Kolkata?

Well, Tiki Taka on Zee5 is a comedy drama, where drama weighs quite more on the beam scale. The story churns up the emotion of football, rather the emotion of the club culture in football in the neighbourhoods or “paras” of the city of joy. Raju is a mediocre taxi driver by profession. But when it comes to wit and presence of mind, he proves to be the king. Khelechi is a Senegalese man trapped in India, who is actually being used as a courier service to smuggle drugs from his country, but somehow lands up empty-handed. It is needless to say how dangerous the drug peddlers are after witnessing series like Kaali on the same platform of Zee5 for 2 seasons. In order to save Khelechi from these notorious drug lords, Raju makes a plan. He gets hold of a struggling journalist Bonny and then spreads the rumour that Khelechi is an excellent football player. While “Khelechi” in Bengali means “have played”, Bonny uses her vocational skills to project this as a pun and trigger sensation among the audience of Bengal. And then the job is done. The result is nothing but a wonder, rather a miracle in Khelechi’s life. He stands victorious in one match and his victory adds glory to a great degree in the football match circuit of Kolkata, where every sport is laden with emotions.

Tiki Taka Bengali movie ranks high on entertainment despite its somewhat fallible storyline. There are quite a lot of aspects that collectively make the film worth watching.

Script

The script of Tiki Taka movie Zee5 neither has intense monologues nor does it offer in depth conversations. But what it has is context and substance. The words of a taxi-driver, the diction of a drug lord, the conversations of a journalist—everything matched up to the well-defined characterisation of this movie.

Acting

While Parambrata Chatterjee leads the show with his delectable performance as the taxi driver Raju and Emona Enabula conquers hearts with his fabulous performance as Khelechi, the supporting cast of the film enhances the entire show with no room for criticism. Paran Bandyopadhyay is one of the most senior actors working in the Bengali film industry—yet his work is so fresh and seems to be so new. Kharaj Mukherjee, known for his timing in comedy, is as fantastic as he always is. Riddhi Sen and Kanchan Mullick play their parts extremely well despite the short screen time that they get. And of course, the “cloud-clapped star”, the “Bob Biswas” of Bengal, Saswata Chatterjee never fails to amaze the viewers in any role that he takes up—from the Topshe of Feluda to PK in Tiki Taka.

Music

Under the supervision of Nabarun Bose, Neel Dutt, Rohan Ghose and Arko Mukherjee, the music and background scores of Tiki Taka took the spirit of the film to another level.    

Cinematography, Special Effects & Editing

With Ravi Kiran Ayyagari as the DOP, the work of camera made a grave mark for the audience. Sumit Chowdhury also did a good job as the editor of Tiki Taka.

Direction

Parambrata Chattopadhyay has given gems with his work of direction to the Bengali film industry. The story and concept of Tiki Taka served well with well-designed cinematic aspects. But a little more thoughtful and practical approach could have made the dish a little meatier. Football is of utmost importance in Bengal—specially on the emotional side. Where East Bengal and Mohanbagan divide peer groups, it is important to delineate the significance of the club culture in the game that Kolkata bears in its heart. Just like a rumour spreading about Khelechi being an eminent footballer managed to spread like fire on petrol, the club personnels should have grilled him thoroughly before including him in the team. This loophole somewhere drags the film down from where it had the capacity to reach. Nonetheless, Tiki Taka is a good project, made with a handful of the best performers in Bengal.
