Graham Staines Movie Review – A well-performed project, but not worthy of the purpose.

The Least of These: The Graham Staines movie on Shemaroo is movie made on the cruel incident of the murder of Graham Stuart Staines along with his two sons in the year 1999. Graham was an Australian Christian missionary. He worked for the leprosy patients in Odissha, India. But a Hindu fundamentalist group named Bajrang Dal believed that he was spreading hatred against Hinduism and forcefully converting Hindus to Christianity. In 1999, some members and followers of Bajrang Dal burnt Graham Stuart Staines alive. His 10-year-old son Philip and 6-year-old son Timothy was also burnt in the same way with their father. Dara Singh, one of the primary activists of the Bajrang Dal group was convicted of leading the assassins of Graham. This incident is referred to as the Graham Staines.

Manav is a journalist who is yet to be a pro. Instead of focussing on interesting subjects that can actually benefit mankind, Manav’s one and only objective is to please his boss, his supervisor in any possible way. The primary aim of Manav’s boss is to forcefully prove that Graham is guilty of forceful conversion in the name of serving the patients of leprosy. Manav knows his boss’s motive and immediately grabs the opportunity to please him without giving any second thought to the vows attached to his profession. He continues to peep into the life of the Staines and gradually starts intervening in quite a forceful way. The sole aim of a journalist is to reflect the truth on the mirror of media and present it to the common mass. But here, this so called “journalist” is busy to manipulate things and establish something as the “truth”, when reality is way different. He breaks all boundaries of ethics and doesn’t even spare the wife of Graham in the darkest hours of distress.

Script

The script of The Least of These: The Graham Staines goes well with the plot. The desperation of Manav to come in the good books of his superior gets well manifested through his delivery. Conversations are framed well, supporting the purpose of motivation and compassion, wherever essential.

Acting

Sharman Joshi did his bit quite well. But his performance was way more confined than his work in other films. He made Manav come out of the screen, but the character failed to show rationality, which is expected of any character, even if it ponders in the darkest corners of irrationality. With immense possibility, Sharman’s performance fails to keep up with the non-accountability of his role. Prakash Balewadi’s entire performance on the other stands on the basis of a sly grin. Being an editor, his body language failed to sculpt out even the structure of the character, leave alone the edges.

Music

With Bruce Retief as the music director of the The Least of These: The Graham Staines release on Shemaroo, background scores were at their very best.

Cinematography, Special Effects & Editing

Jayakrishna Gummadi as the DOP of The Least of These: The Graham Staines, could have given the viewers some opportunity to enjoy cinematographic moments with more determination. But he fails to give a new eye. Steven H. Bernard did a good work as the editor of The Least of These: The Graham Staines.

Direction

Aneesh Daniel made The Least of These: The Graham Staines movie an out and out narrative, with no background narrator. If an event is portrayed on screen that has already occurred in reality, there is no need for people to view what happened through a film when hundreds of news channels are doing their work, or rather had done their work back in 1999-2003. What the viewers seek from the film is the point of view of the filmmaker, or a strong message that the audience will remember as the substance of the film. Sadly, with potential performers, The Graham Staines lacked both the elements which were the key grabbing points from this film.
