What happens when the system gets flawed, so much so, that a man, claiming himself to be “holy” attempts to satisfy his insatiable hunger for power in the garb of spirituality?
Well, the consequence is nothing but doom and destruction of the faith, the belief and the livelihood of mankind. The story begins with the murder of a young girl in the year of 2007, somewhere in the localities of Ayodhya. Theories start boiling up based on her murder. On the other hand, after a decade or so, a man who spills out spirituality is portrayed, with nearly half-a-crore disciples who have no intent or though of questioning any of the man’s actions or words.
Addressed as Kashipur waale Baba Nirala, his disciples greet each other with japnaam, while he himself stands to be the on-earth paalanhaar of his bhakts. While the traces of mythology take us to the belief that bhakti involves shakti, analysing and utilising the present situation of India, Baba rightly says: “Bhakti ki zaroorat, kamzor aur gareeb logon ko zyaada hoti hain na”.

Script
The script of Aashram web series MX Player undoubtedly has a lot of punch and good substance to complement the well-designed and perfectly characterised story of the series. The dialect, although monotonous at places, but absolutely substantiating, coupled very well with the backdrop of the series. But one looking at the delivery and diction, viewers will definitely get a good retreat to the Amazon Prime masterpiece Pataal Lok.
Acting
In Aashram web series Bobby Deol is undoubtedly the face of the show. He slips with ease into the skin of the character and slowly sculpts it out in the best possible way. He is calculative and never forgets to stand as the saviour of the oppressed. He carries the flag of spirituality in such a way that his followers with no second thought takes his advices as the messages of the Almighty. Aditi Sudhir Pohankar’s bold delivery as Pammi will keep the viewers glued throughout. Vikram Kochhar, Chandan Roy Sanyal and Tridha Choudhury did a very good job along with the other casting members of Aashram.
Music
Sunny Inder and Advait Nemlekar played a great part in designing the music of Aashram. Background scores sparked with thrill.
Cinematography, Special Effects & Editing
With Chandan Kowli as the DoP, the cinematography of Aashram was absolutely enthralling. Santosh Mandal also did a good work as the editor of Aashram.
Direction
Aashram is based on a theme on which several projects have been made across India. What lacked in this powerful production is the missing of newness. Crime has no colour. Oppression has no different consequence. But presentation and detailing could have differed to a good degree with a remarkable director like Prakash Jha, and that too in his digital debut.
