Ramsingh Charlie Sony Liv movie found its release in the year of 2018. The re-release of this movie on the OTT platform is a gift of Sony Liv to the viewers who have been struggling to overcome with the monotony of quarantine lifestyle and work from home schedules.

Circus has become a dying form of entertainment, specially for all souls who wish to smile by watching humans dressed as various characters to shower creativity and spread happiness. If we consider plays or drama as a mode of entertainment, that has taken a backseat as compared to feature films, OTT releases and daily soaps, Circus somewhere plays the role of this analogical representative of drama.

Ram Singh works at Jango Circus, with the stage name of Charlie. Things were going quite well with his teenage son Chintu and wife Kajri who is expecting the second child of the couple. Masterji, the owner of Jango circus had immense love and compassion for all. But as she passed away, her son Nabeel did not find it beneficial to keep up with the almost non-profitable business of circus. Overnight, Jango Circus met its doom, and all its employees came straight to the streets, unemployed, not having any idea of what to do or where to go.

With Kajri’s immense support, Ram Singh moved to Kolkata, the City of Joy, the culture capital of India. Kolkata celebrates tradition—with yellow taxis and hand-pulled rickshaws, the city stands in pride as Tilottama. With the meagre savings that Ram Singh had, he manages a roof with just an awning, and sends Kajri to their village for her safe delivery.

His income begins through a hand-pull rickshaw, one of the elements of the golden tradition of the capital of Bengal. When Kajri returns with her new born, she is devasted to see Ram Singh living miles away from his passion, light years distant from what he loves the most. And then begins their journey, a journey to find circus, to re-enliven the flavour, the forgotten charm of circus in another epicentre of entertainment of India, Kolkata.

Ramsingh Charlie is a story of struggle for living and struggle for living with your choices. The tits and bits of this film, rather the central subject of the film takes us to the iconic portrayal of Raj Kapoor in Mera Naam Joker years ago. But struggle takes a different form where a joker tries to find his way to survive and not just his identity.

Script

The script of Ramsingh Charlie complements the plot quite well. In terms of dialects and diction, the script defines the characters with good work of detailing. The script also upheld the justification of the special touch of makeup and costumes used in Ramsingh Charlie. There was punch, there was substance, and most importantly, there was context in the script.

Acting

Kumud Mishra in and as Ram Singh as well as Charlie ruled the show with immense passion and determination towards his craft. On one hand he portrayed a man whose life and family suddenly had neither future nor any direction. The frustration of not being able to identify his target was displayed on screen very well. On the other hand, the man who played the character of the King of Comedy—Charlie Chaplin on the stage. His switching style of change in personality made him all the more demanding in the character of Ram Singh. Divya Dutta as Kajri was a manifestation of elegance and poverty at the same time. She is undoubtedly one of those rare performers who could deliver Kainaaz in Kaafira and Kajri in Ramsingh Charlie with equal expertise.

Music

The music of Ramsingh Charlie, although created by Troy Arif and Arijit Datta, required some more attention. Music in any film plays a governing role in bringing out the emotions from the viewers as well, while they are watching the film.

Cinematography, Special Effects & Editing

Subranshu Das, and Madhav Salunkhe as the DOP of Ramsingh Charlie did a great job as far as the cinematography of the film is concerned. Shachindra Vats did a good work as the editors of Ramsingh Charlie.

Direction

Nitin Kakkar’s directorial approach to this film was remarkable. It is difficult to direct a film with a concept that has been worked upon by the legendary director Raj Kapoor. Ramsingh Charlie finds the best touch of detailing and above all, it never makes the viewers tired of watching treachery in the already tough times of a world pandemic.
