Mee Raqsam Review – A story of supreme importance, a tale free from scruples.
Mee Raqsam meaning is ‘I Dance’ in Persian. The story of Mee Raqsam on Zee5 talks about the struggle story of a young school girl named Maryam. Her mother Sakeena loves to dance and could emulate any dance move from the TV with no formal training. While teaching a peacock dance move to Maryam, Sakeena had an attack and passed away.
Salim, Maryam’s father, is a tailor who was not very affluent. Sakina’s elder sister is a strict woman who believes that Muslim women should make themselves ready for marriage by educating themselves to a limit and then learning household chores like sewing and other skills that a woman needs and does not want. Hasim Seth is an elite Muslim who holds good power and is known for standing up for his community, only for those who obey the principles of Islam “in his way”.
After Sakina passes away, her sister along with her family come to visit them and take part in the rituals of Sakina’s demise. Soon, Salim discovers that Maryam has immense passion for Bharatnattyam, and she is intimidated by the dance classes that go on in the other end of their village, Mijwain in Uttar Pradesh. Salim believes in religious harmony and despite not belonging to the egalitarian section of the society, he understands that no form of art can ever be bound by the man-made concepts and discrimination of religion, caste or creed.
The struggle becomes difficult not only for Maryam, but also for Salim as his tailor shop gets boycotted and he is forbidden from entering the local masjid. While Maryam does not even feel the slightest dilemma in offering prayers through dance through Nataraj or the deity of earth, every other person of her community in her neighbourhood compares Bharatnattyam with idol worship and Apsara culture of paradise of the Hindus.
Jaiprakash, initially the sponsor of Maryam’s ghungroos, becomes scornful towards her on learning about her religion. He is portrayed to be the Hindu counter-person of Hasim Seth, played by Naseeruddin Shah on Zee5 in Mee Raqsam.

Mee Raqsam Release Date
August 21, 2020.
Mee Raqsam movie is an initially slow production—but slowly the story takes its pace and gets to the summit of climax.
Script
The script of Mee Raqsam (2020) retains the flavour of prejudice whenever required—it also reflects the urge for freedom: not through protests, not through slogans, but through moves, moves of the dance that comes with the first step. Dialects and dictions have shaped up the characters quite well.
Acting
Naseeruddin Shah melted in his character and made his presence felt in the brevity of screen time. Aditi Subedi charmed well with her debut in the industry. Yet, the man of the match here stands to be none other than Danish Husain. His skills reflected not only in his words, but also in his silence. He was not over-expressive, he played in proportions.
Music
Under the supervision of Ripul Sharma, the music and background scores of Mee Raqsam songs might not have charged up the movie or built its tension. But it surely gave the film a layer of peace and elegance, even in the darkest moments.
Cinematography, Special Effects & Editing
Mohsin Khan Pathan’s work of camera for the title screens as well as for the beginning shots raised the bar of expectations to a good degree. But as the film got deeper, the moments of cinematography got faded out gradually. Pooraj Kapoor did an excellent job as the editor of Mee Raqsam.
Direction
Mee Raqsam Baba Azmi’s directorial approach is worthy of appreciation. What lacks is the absence of pedantry in the film. Mee Raqsam meaning “I dance”. These words in Urdu were never uttered by Maryam even once. This could have given the film a poignant angle. When Maryam’s aunt (Khaala Jaan) learns about her interest and Salim’s indulgence in dance, she readily blurts out with a no-big-deal expression; “Tavaayif banaane ka iraada hai kya?”—and that too when her sister has just left for heaven. A father who teaches his daughter: “baat Hasim Seth ki baat maan ne ya na maan ne ki nahi hai, baat hai sahi ya galat ki” readily makes it okay for her to face the light teasing of one of her class-mates. Mee Raqsam might not be prescriptive, but it surely becomes paradoxical with constant repetition of the central theme of the film.
