Metro Kathalu Review – Breezy Portrait of a life in metropolis.

Metro Kathalu movie story is an anthology collection of four stories of individuals living their lives in a metropolis (Hyderabad).

Chandu and Abirami, commitment phobic Corporate Professionals, who are dilly-dallying on taking their relationship forward, finally look set to understand each other’s lives, on a date.

A middle-aged Manjula is at the crossroads of her life in a sad wedding with a husband who is unable to appear on the better side his failures. He suddenly meets with an accident.

Supriya, despite marrying her love interest, is feeling suffocated staying with a materialistic husband who has lost himself for the chase of monetary happiness.

Abbas recollects the void created by the absence of his father and his love for him during a communication with kids.

Where are the individual stories headed? What does it mean to live a life in metropolis? Is it the chase towards your

ambitions and monetary independence worth it all? Do our lifestyles cause irreparable injury to your relationships?

Metro Kathalu Aha leaves you lingering with these queries and does not provide convenient answers. It merely nudges you to assume on these lines, introspect and leaves several aspects to your interpretation. That is the wonder of a story coming alive on the visual medium. Metro Kathalu is benefited by the fact that it is adapted from a book by the same name and never lets its breezy, light-weight vibration get tormented by the purportedly ‘heavy issues’ it tries to deal with. Metro Kathalu stories invoke a bunch of ‘hard , open-ended no one is right or wrong’ conversations.

Abirami, for instance, financially independent before her relationship takes off, informs her beau that monetary independence would stay her priority after wedding. That a part of her earnings would continue to be given to her folks for their well-being.

Manjula talks about her pent-up anger before a stranger who is simply a concerned individual at the hospital that her husband is admitted in.

Supriya asks her money-chasing husband if it would take a calamity to revive their relationship ever again?

In terms of concepts with utmost minimalism, not compromising on impact, the primary 2 stories within the anthology work best. The verbal communication between the corporate employees leaves us intrigued concerning the long run of their relationship whereas throwing us enough hints about their elemental mindset.

The second story about Manjula and Varun normalizes the physical attraction of a middle-aged lady, while not passing judgements. It nudges the thought that a one night stand with an intruder need not necessarily have anything deeper to it, which means that it may just be an expression of desire. It reminds us that strangers can sometimes be nice individuals to open up to. There are enough dialogues and silences for us to process the intent of the characters. With each story, the intent is never wrong, it is astereotypical and therefore forces the viewer to think differently. The message is neither pedantic, nor forceful, particularly within the story concerning Supriya’s indifference outlook towards her marriage.

It may or may not appear sensible that two partners in a wedding would stay in different cities, pursue earnings and not have children for the same reason. The utilization of art to convey the distance between two individuals in a relationship is effective, however neither the void in their relationship nor the medical condition of Supriya invokes empathy.

The final story in Metro Kathalu Aha was a father ‘Abbas’ reminiscing at his childhood and his deeper reference to tender palm shoots. The acting is superb in this short. It is apparent that the story lacks a bigger purpose, rightly so. Everything that the storyteller intends to mention is simply said out through dialogues and the craft is direct. Those seeking a whiff of nostalgia with a grandma’s tale could be warmed by the story.

Acting

Whether or not the stories/narrations are attention-grabbing, the performances are undoubtedly great. Sanaa and Ali Reza deliver tight acts. Thiruveer, who was seen in ‘George Reddy’ and ‘Mallesham’ in the past, is somewhat unrecognizable. Nakshatra is outshined by Nandini Rai, whose misery is racking. Rajeev Kanakala could be a bit melodramatic, however Gayatri Bhargavi is inconspicuous.

Technical aspects

Sans any songs, this 75-minute web-film comes across as slightly nebulous, sometimes lifeless thanks to its background score. The cinematography is passable.

Direction

Director Karuna Kumar has done a passable job at adapting Kadheer Babu’s novel. The, the dialogues and scenes are riddled with a powerful literary flavor. Nakshatra meets Thiruveer during a cafe and keeps on delivering a monologue. The unstoppable  train of monologues ends solely with the ultimate story, where Rajeev Kanakala’s character delivers an extended, homesick speech that’s painfully dry.

Even with a 75 minute duration, ‘Metro Kathalu’ could be a drag as a result of the studious nature of the scenes. The characters, particularly those essayed by Ali Reza and even Rajeev Kanakala, are either too unreal or too teary-eyed.
