Raat Akeli Hai Movie Review – The unrushed narrative and intelligent tease with which the Director plays with the viewers is rather amazing.
Raat Akeli Hai movie is a Netflix movie revolving around the hateful, piteous life and existence of Radha (Radhika Apte) in her own house. She is a young mistress of a rich, boisterous and meandering old man, a politician, who is found dead in his house. After his death, her claim on the family property is regularly questioned and all the family members want her to leave the house. She opposes them vehemently and stays put.
Jatil Yadav ( Nawazuddin Siddiqui), a middle-aged competent police officer is in charge of the murder investigation. His conscientiousness at solving the case by incriminating the right person is commendable. His thorough investigation leads him to uncover some difficult to face truths about the family. A family living in fear, a pedophile, a vested ulterior motive, forced physical relations, pinning a family member in a hateful manner, nothing leads to a conclusion towards a happy family. In fact, a dark, dysfunctional set of humans living under one roof emerges.
The more he investigates, the more he gets convinced that the murder is in fact, an insider job who is trying to misleadingly incriminate Radhika Apte’s character Radha. Committing a crime to hide another, During the course of his probe, Jatil also develops a soft corner for the woman.

Raat Akeli Hai Trailer
Review
The movie maintains its suspense right till the end and keeps the viewer engaged. The length of the film could perhaps be condensed as the build up is slow and tardy. But towards the final hour of Raat Akeli Hai, the film picks up revelation momentum while keeping the viewer hungry to know about the real culprit.
Performances and Characterization
With a stellar starcast like Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Radhika Apte , Ila Arun, Shweta Tripathi, Shivani Raghuvanshi, Tigmanshu Dhulia, among others one can expect a dramatic fare with nuanced characters. Importantly, this is exactly what he gets. There are depth and importance of each character in this film, no matter how small the role may seem.
Nawazuddin as a thorough investigator, Radhika as the troubled yet resilient wife of the murdered man, Shweta Tripathi as his married daughter trying to understand and undergoing the pain of constantly living in fear, all portray their small roles but in-depth layered characters rather well.
The relationship of a middle-aged unmarried man with his widowed mother (Ila Arun) is portrayed rather endearingly in Raat Akeli Hai. The little taunts, the insistence to get married at the earliest, the loneliness of a widow mother longing to see her son’s wife, the emotional blackmail and generally a well-wishing pure-hearted relationship is extremely appealing. Even in the son-mother fights the love and care for each other is more than evident. Their scenes together are strewn with beautifully nuanced dialogues and apt comic timing. Some great Screenplay in there. That mother-son dialogue exchange formed a compelling reason to binge-watch Raat Akeli Hai.
All together the characterization and performances by the starcast are almost 70% of the reason why Raat Akeli Hai is a good watch.
Radhika Apte had missing from the Indian OTT scene for some time. But Raat Akeli Hai while being a film being carried for the greatest part on Siddiqui’s shoulders is a good performance by Apte. She does not try too hard to grab screen space, but gets into the heart and flesh of Radha, the culpable victim with ease.
Story
The rest 30% is the carefully thought through story telling in the movie arc. While there are multiple angles to the whodunnit, they get revealed one after the other, almost never completing an obvious picture of the culprit. Almost all the suspects seem to be culpable at some or the other stage and the viewer is gasping for a conclusive revelation right till the end. It is impossible to guess the real reason and ulterior motives behind the murder of the devious landlord. And when they reveal, it is experiential to connect the dots. The unrushed narrative and intelligent tease with which the Director plays with the viewers is rather amazing.
Dialogues
The thick UP accent to the delivery of the dialogue of all the characters is unmistakable and provides consistency to the performances. The dialogues are not forced, not over the top, yet their routineness is unique.
