Johaar Movie Review – A raw and daring statement on the politico-social scenario in the country.

Johaar Telugu movie has 5 totally different stories running parallelly. A young CM(Krishna Chaitanya) needs to create a huge sculpture in memory of his late father to gather public sympathy. The other stories involve a young sports person(Naina Ganguly), a poor farmer(Eeswari Rao), a young girl(Esther), and an converted man(Subhalekha Sudhakar). How their lives get affected in a political move forms the story.

Andhra Pradesh’s CM Achuta Ramayya expires, with his son (Chaitanya Krishna) taking up the mantle. In stead of keeping his father’s image clean in his death, he decides to make the world’s largest sculpture (Sounds familiar?) to deify his father.

In Amalapadu, Srikakulam district, Ganga (Eshwari Rao) and her young female offspring Chinni are in mourning, as they lost a loved one to the Uddanam Uropathy. In Varanasi, there is a young chaiwala Siddhu (Ankith Koyya)living the house of an ill mannered lady (Esther Anil). Bose (Subhalekha Sudhakar) runs a home for derelict youngsters in Rayalaseema, however has no funds to even fix the roof of their house. A street entertainer (Naina Ganguly) from Visakhapatnam is told she will be able to fulfil her dreams of being an athelete. However, one man’s political call affects several lives is what Johaar is all about.

History may be a set of lies ! It is told from the point of view of the writer and their ideology. To reveal something more concerning the film would be an injustice to the complex tale Teja Marni weaves, keeping one engaged from the outset. He takes his own time to introduce every character and their plight, typically even weaving in songs composed by Priyadarshan to align the correct mood (cue: Idi Varanasi). The plush picture taking by Jagadeesh Cheekati helps.

Performances & Characterization

The only ppoint that looks out of place in Johaar movie story. Naina Ganguly plays her character with an odd accent, ruins the flow of an otherwise sleek film. Her character does not leave the viewer with the kind of emotion expected of it. Despite having stalwarts like Subhalekha Sudhakar and Eshwari Rao heading some segments, young actors Ankith Koyya (Aswathama, Majili) and Esther Anil (Drushyam) manage to shoulder theirs with exceptional ease.

Subhalekha Sudhakar plays a person who was once a traveler for the Bose regiment. Now a caretaker of several orphans, he makes you believe his concern that these youngsters could return to being orphans if anything happens to him. Eshwari Rao brings forth the heart-breaking desperation of a mother hoping against hope to develop a bright future for her son. Ankith Koyya, who was last seen as a neurotic, shows off his softer facet as a young boy who needs his crush to notice him and believes the globe is one massive happy family. Esther Anil brings some much-needed texture to the sweet story as a lassie who needs to flee her mother’s claws before she sells her. Chaitanya has done a decent job as a young politician blinded  by ambition, somebody who cannot see the repercussions of his actions.

Casting

The casting for this film is completely spot on. The actors work their several roles with sincerity and shoulder the film effectively. Eshwari Rao carries a meaty one. The mother-daughter episodes leave the viewers teary-eyed and the emotional connection is apparent.

Subhaleka Sudhakar, Esther Anil, and Chaitanya deliver delicate performances. Naina Ganguly, who was last seen in glamourous roles gets an author-backed character and she handles it with care.

Music

Upbeat music and unconventional lyrics build the aura of the film.  Delivered in sort of a non-conformist semi-devotional and semi-mythical variety, this Varanasi special possesses fascinating vibes.  Asura’s voice is typical for a rap variety like this one.  The song raises curiosity concerning the film ‘Johaar’.

Direction

Teja Marni depends on the audience to understand the proceedings with not a lot of spoon-feeding. A few dialogues do get informative. The climax that unfolds makes Rohini look reserved in an otherwise refined tale, particularly the scene which features a prolonged speech by her character. Barring these flaws, Teja Marni’s Johaar is a raw and daring statement on the political scenario within the country nowadays and that makes Johaar movie on aha a good watch!
