Darbar is an action film directed by established Kollywood and Tollywood director A.R.Murugadoss.
Murugadoss is well known for Ghajini, Thupaki(Holiday), Journey and Kaththi. Murugadoss is also known for his creative writing and extraordinary screenplay. However, Darbar despite its superstar lead of Rajinikanth, Thalaiva fails to impress as much.
Arunachalam (Rajnikanth) is a policeman who comes to Mumbai along with his daughter Valli for his duty. Taking a chance of saving the daughter of a minister, Arunachalam catches drug peddlers and kidnappers. The gang is lead by Ajay Malhotra, whom everyone assumes as the son of Vinod Malhotra. Arunachalam arrests Ajay. Imprisoned Ajay with the help of corrupt officials escapes to Thailand. Learning this, Arunachalam seeks the help of the Thai police and catches Ajay. But the court dismisses the case and declares proxy Ajay as the real Ajay.
Arunachalam encounters proxy Ajay and puts officials under pressure where they have to show the body to the public. This leaves no other option to kill real Ajay and replace the body. This is when Ajay’s real father Hari Chopra comes and kills Vinod in agony.
Finding the real reason for his child’s death, Hari Chopra kills Valli.
To avenge Vallis’s death, Arunachalam with the help of a clue left by his daughter manages to kill Hari Chopra.
Far greater expected from veterans like Rajnikanth and Murugadoss. The average story made the movie purely commercial. Rajinikanth’s action sequences mesmerize his fans like always, he bonds strongly with his dialogue delivery as well. But the story is the same old. The movie has got very few punch lines, for which Thalaiva is known for. Few elevation scenes at intermission can be given credit. Nayanathara and Nivetha Thomas barely had a role, but they are good.
Darbar movie trailer depicts the story and seems more interesting than the movie itself.
Music by Anirudh Ravichandran, who is known for his mass touch is good but the background score could have done better. Rajinikanth’s Petta movie music was composed by Anirudh and that is the level something expected from him. Comparatively, Anirudh didn’t reach expectations in Rajnikanth’s Darbar movie.
