Story

Released on 10th January 2020 (Zee5), “Kark Rogue” is a medical thriller that successfully manages to grasp and engage with its audience.

There have been shows in this genre namely “Lakhon Me Ek Season 2” and “Breathe”, both on Amazon Prime Video, Kark Rogue, in comparison has a script that is much tighter.

The show is fast-paced such that the audience would be engaged at all times. The show also achieves a feat that no other multilingual show has in the history of OTT shows so far, which is that all the scenes have been shot twice, once in Hindi language and then in Bengali. This stands as a testament to the commitment and effort that has been put in by the entire production team involved in the making of the show.

The show is set in the 21st century times with the metropolitan city of Kolkata serving as the base. Without revealing much, the show starts with addressing criminal activities in contrast with legitimate and legal businesses all coexisting under the same roof. With no further delay, we see how characters over the time undergo realisation, individual struggles and real moral checks as they go deeper into dealing with the problems of their lives. As much as the show starts with a theme of a character’s personal struggles, the show gently, yet quickly transitions into the darker side of the medical industry, using cancer as its plot gambit.

“Kark Rogue Review – A Rather Dark, Yet Enlightening Series Busting Organised Medical Crime.

As much as the show starts with a theme of a character’s personal struggles, the show gently, yet quickly transitions into the darker side of the medical industry. Clearly, with the title of the show kept in mind, it’s clear the show is based upon the medicine industry that deals with cancer and its treatment enterprises.

On a number of occasions, not only they seem to be connecting, but we eventually see the show first address a variety of things, then get entangled and then untangle with a beautiful depiction of these transitions followed by the final outcome, as it does.

We also see the show address the issue of corruption with a much different and severed perspective. Corruption out of greed is one thing, but the show manages to showcase where in corruption takes a dark inhumane turn when it’s out of greed arising as a result of negligence of human life and its survival. Corruption is not black and white, but it is more of a grey area. Same is done for the illegal marketing involving drugs and narcotics. The show also highlights how the entire administration structure has been crippled owing to the unethical practices that have crept even into the judicial system of the nation.

As much as the credit goes to the writers, the directors and the team which was behind the ideation and cast executing the sets, a significant credit should also be given to the cinematography team and the DoP, in specific, who has managed to do such a great job at capturing that dark tone and convey the theme intended.
